Campus Internationalization 

The Center for Global Education is committed to the continued development of a globalized UTC and further internationalization of UTC classes. With that in mind, we are pleased to offer these very unique opportunities that are offered by our affiliate partner, CIS Abroad. 

Using a comparative approach and the CIS Abroad portfolio of subject matter experts (SMEs) from around the world, CIS Abroad will arrange a series of three to six distinct guest lecturers who will each deliver live lectures, specifically to your class times around a specific curricular theme. Lectures will take place over the course of the term, considering the preferred dates of the instructor, time zone considerations, and availability of global partners. This project provides efficient and immediate internationalization to existing curricula while expanding faculty members’ global networks. 

Pricing: starting at $1,400 per Lecture Series (three lectures for one course). Pricing is customized after a consultation call with a member of the CIS Abroad team. 

Take your faculty-led program to a new destination – online! CIS Abroad will work with faculty to adapt any traditional faculty-led program (FLP) into a virtually delivered experience. The experienced Faculty-Led Team at CIS Abroad will collaborate with faculty leaders, determining which inclusions work best for their course. CIS Abroad will then organize their international contributors and coordinate the delivery of the program content. This is a highly customizable, multi-modal option that is more comprehensive and immersive than the CIS Abroad Lecture Series project.  

Pricing: estimated costs of $4,000 - $6,000 per cohort. Given these programs are tailor made to fit faculty goals and learning outcomes, exact cost will vary dependent on desired inclusions. 

These labs help students understand the “why?” and the “so what” of culture based on Kolb’s theory of experiential learning. Through a three-part series of engaging, virtual cultural activities, students are exposed to the concept of culture and cultural differences through the eyes of a local. This series can be utilized as a curricular component of a course or as a co-curricular option for a cohort of students. These labs are designed to meet experiential learning course requirements. A facilitation guide is included. 

Pricing: starting at $1,700 per Lab (three activities centered around a single theme). Pricing is customized after a consultation call with a member of the CIS Abroad team. 

This structured learning experience can be integrated into an existing course, or a 3-credit course can be designed and delivered (by CIS Abroad) for the UTC campus. It provides students with the opportunity to apply theory to practice, and to assist an organization abroad in need of specific skills and support. These group-based, community-focused impact projects match faculty members and their classes in the U.S. with organizations (clients) located in one of CIS Abroad’s program sites across the globe. At the end of the term, students provide concrete deliverables to their client abroad, thus helping their partner organization expand their work.

Faculty Exchange

Interested faculty may have the opportunity for temporary faculty exchange opportunities at one of our partner exchange universities. Currently, UTC has signed exchange agreements with the following overseas partners:

Faculty Led Programs

Faculty Led Programs are study abroad opportunities designed by UTC faculty members. The study abroad trip is linked with the UTC course the faculty member is teaching. 

Trips can take place during the Fall, Spring, or Summer terms and can last anywhere from 1-week to a full semester (UTC FLPs usually average 1-4 weeks in duration). 

In order to make the FLP process as smooth as possible, the CGE parnters with study abroad providers to build the desired program. All proposals submitted through the CGE are required to use one of the UTC approved study abroad providers to run the FLP.

Any individual who plans on teaching a course at UTC is eligible to propose a faculty-led trip.

Adjunct Faculty: Currently adjunct faculty will only be approved to lead a trip abroad if they are co-leading with another (non-adjunct) faculty member. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis. 

So, you've decided you want to learn more or you are ready to design a trip? Great! The Center for Global Education is here to assist you throughout the process. 

To request the Faculty Led Proposal Application, send an email to Laura Livermore and let her know what you're thinking for a trip (timeframe, location, etc) and that you'd like to receive the application packet. 

The Center for Global Education makes every effort to provide some type of scholarship funding to eligible individuals taking part in faculty-led trips. Depending on the CGE scholarship budget and individuals going abroad, scholarship funds may be limited from year to year. 

In order to be eligible to receive possible scholarship funds for a faculty-led trip, proposals (for new trips) and notification of re-occuring trips, must be submitted to Laura Livermore/the CGE no later than the following dates:

Summer & Fall Programs: September 1st (of the year prior to travel - ex. for a trip running Summer or Fall 2020, the CGE must be notified by September 1, 2019).

Spring Programs: February 1st (of the year prior to travel - ex. for a trip running Spring 2021, the CGE must be notified by February 1, 2020).

If the CGE is notified of trips after the above dates, scholarship funding will likely not be available for the trip.

Award Amounts: scholarship awards range from $500 - $1,000 and will be awarded for 5-10 participants.

Depending on CGE scholarship funds, students who receive scholarships for faculty-led trips from other UTC departments (of a sizable amount), may not be eligible to receive a CGE faculty-led program scholarship.


Safety and Risk Management: Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

Be prepared.

Faculty leaders should be aware of the unique risk and responsibilities associated with any faculty-led trip abroad.

Below you will find some guidelines and information to help you prepare to lead a trip abroad. You will find information on handling a crisis situation abroad, should one arise.

Handling a crisis situation while leading a faculty-led trip abroad is not optional. As the faculty leader, you are responsible for understanding the responsibility you have to the students while abroad.

Prior to Departure

Prior to departure faculty members will be contacted by a staff member from the Office of Study Abroad regarding scheduling a time to meet with Stephanie Rowland, Title IX Coordinator.

All faculty members leading a UTC faculty-led trip abroad must meet with Stephanie Rowland prior to their departure.

See below to determine what information you should expect from the Office of Study Abroad prior to departure:

If the faculty leader has designed and organized their entire faculty-led trip, with no assistance from a study abroad provider, then the faculty leader(s) will be provided with the following information for each participant:

  • Copy of the participant's passport identification page
  • Emergency contact information (name and phone number)
  • Medical Information (if provided by the participant)
  • Health Insurance information (copies of health insurance cards)

If the faculty member has worked with the Office of Study Abroad to have a provider design and organize their faculty led trip, then the faculty leader(s) will be provided all relevant information by the provider. Faculty members should expect the following information, at a minimum, for each participant:

  • Copy of the participant's passport identification page
  • Emergency contact information 
  • Medical Information (if provided by the participant)
  • Health Insurance information

Know before you go

Faculty leaders should provide the Office of Study Abroad with the following information prior to their departure:

  • Contact information while abroad
  • Emergency contact information
Faculty leaders should report any Critical Incident to the Office of Study Abroad immediately. If in doubt, faculty leaders should still reach out to the Office of Study Abroad for guidance. 

Critical incidents would include any of the following:

  • Student Illness or Injury
  • Drug/Alcohol Abuse
  • Student Arrest
  • Missing Student
  • Student is the victim of a crime
  • Student is hospitalized or is in need of medical evacuation
  • Student death
  • Sexual assault
  • Attempted suicide
  • Natural Disaster
  • Civil Unrest/Act of Terrorism

Faculty leaders should contact the Office of Study Abroad as soon as possible after any Critical Incident occurs. Faculty leaders should take into consideration the situation and the needs of their student(s) in the timeline for contacting the Office of Study Abroad.

Depending on the situation, there may be other individuals on campus who should be notified (i.e. Dean of Students, Title IX Coordinator, etc).

Additionally, faculty leaders should use their own judgment when contacting student emergency contacts.

Responding to Critical Incidents

Students participating in a UTC affiliated faculty led trip will always have international health insurance coverage while abroad. Should a student suffer an injury or illness while abroad, the following steps should be followed:

  • Immediately seek appropriate medical care. This could be through a doctor visit for minor illness or seeking emergency services at a hospital for major illnesses or injuries. 
  • Faculty leaders should be willing and able to accompany students to the appropriate facilities should an illness or injury occur.
  • Depending on the nature of the illness or injury, the Office of Study Abroad should be notified when feasible (i.e. once a student has been safely handed over to the care of a medical professional).
  • Minor illnesses or injuries do not, necessarily, have to be reported to the Office of Study Abroad. Minor colds or injuries may not warrant medical attention and would not, in many instances, need to be reported to the Office of Study Abroad.

If a student is arrested while participating in a faculty-led trip, the Office of Study Abroad and Dean of Students should be notified immediately. 

Students should be given the contact information for the nearest US embassy/consulate.

  • The US embassy/consulate cannot, and will not, provide legal counsel to the student, but they can ensure that the student has access to services/resources that they are legally entitled to.

If a student is thought to be missing, every attempt should be made to reach the student via cell phone (if applicable). If the student cannot be reached, then attempts should be made to contact any friends s/he may have on the trip. It's possible that the student notified a friend of their intent to go somewhere.

If no one has heard or seen the student then the student should be reported missing to the appropriate authorities in country.

The Office of Study Abroad should immediately be notified of the missing student.

All UTC staff, faculty and students who go abroad should register in the Department of State's STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) prior to their departure.

Faculty members should establish communication with all participants as soon as possible. Communication should also be made with the Office of Study Abroad.

If communication cannot be made, faculty member's should ensure that students all know of a centralized meeting point (a back up meeting point should also be established, in case the primary meeting point is inaccessible).
