How can I get involved?

Read the book!  We would like to start a campus-wide dialogue. If you are on-campus (current students, faculty, and staff), look for emails that will direct you to participating in book clubs or volunteering.  If you are not yet on campus (incoming students), we will introduce you to the program on the Friday before fall classes start.         

How do I get a copy of the book?  

Copies of the book will available for purchase at the bookstore during summer orientation. Students can also check out copies at the UTC Library and the Chattanooga Public Library.

Will the book be used in any of my classes? 

Yes! Members of the English Department will be using the book in English 1010 (Rhetoric and Composition), and other faculty members may also incorporate it into their classes.

Why a Read to Achieve Program? 

Each fall, university-level students embark on a unique journey. At UTC, we strive to alleviate some of the concerns shared by numerous first-year students by joining them in a common experience. Not only will our students share the joys, frustrations, and excitement of attending college for the first time, they will be drawn together in a more intimate common experience even before they enter their first class meeting.

This program helps students learn about people who may be, think, and/or act differently than they are/do and helps them have a space to learn how to talk and talk about these differences in civil, respectful, open discussions. This engagement is how we at UTC help our students engage with an increasingly diverse world.
