Ways to Participate—Undergraduate Students

 

UTC undergraduate students may participate in poster, podium, and performance presentation sessions. In addition, students are encouraged to participate in the undergraduate lightning pitch competition. 

NOTE: Before registering for the conference please make certain that you are available to present your work on April 14, 2020.  When you register for the conference you may indicate your session preference. Conference staff will make every effort to accommodate registrant preferences; however, space limitations will dictate the final schedule.

Eligibility to Present

To present at ReSEARCH Dialogues

  • have a mentor (UTC faculty or staff)
  • be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking student in good academic standing
  • have an active UTC email address and student ID#
  • have a mentor who is supervising the project
  • be a currently enrolled, degree-seeking student in good academic standing
  • have an active school email address

Information Regarding Group Presentations

One application will be submitted by the primary presenter on behalf of the group. Gather the following information for EACH Group member before beginning the registration form.

  1. Full Name
  2. Email Address
  3. UTC ID ( if applicable)
  4. Major
  5. T-shirt size

Need help preparing your presentation? The Office for URaCE will host several presentation preparation workshops during the spring semester. Workshop registration opens January 2020.  

Poster presentation sessions will feature individual or group research posters, creative works, models, and other interactive modes of communication. Undergraduate poster sessions will be scheduled on DAY ONE of the conference, Tues. April 14. 

Poster and Display Session One is scheduled from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 

Poster and Display Session Two is scheduled from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Poster and Display Presentation Format Details

* Posters will be affixed to a foam board.  Displays may include a combination of poster and other display materials such as models, works of art (painting, photographs, sculptures, musical scores, poetry, etc.), simulations (using laptop computers, tablets, etc.), Augmented Reality (AR) or Virtual Reality (VR) displays, and other interactive materials.

Poster Sizes

Your poster must be sized to one of the following size dimensions:

 3 x 4 OR  4 x 7 feet.

Poster Printing

  • Presenters are responsible for printing their own posters. Clips will be provided for affixing posters to boards.

Podium presentation sessions will feature individual or group oral and visual presentations. 

Undergraduate podium presentation sessions will be scheduled on DAY ONE of the conference, Tues. April 14, in the UC auditorium.

Podium Presentation Session One is scheduled from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM 

Podium Presentation Session Two is scheduled from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Podium Presentation Format Details

  • Podium presentations can include performances such as speeches, scholarly talks, or discussions about a work of art (an artist’s talk for example).
  • Podium presentations will run no more than 15 minutes in duration including questions. Presenters will load the slide deck (and/or other visual components) on to computers in the assigned presentation room after check-in. Presenters are encouraged to check in early to allow ample time to load presentations and check equipment.

TIP: Slide presentations should be stored in multiple formats including on a jump drive, cloud storage, and e-mail to ensure accessibility.

Performance Presentations:  Will include individual or group performances in music, theatre, dance and other creative formats. 

Undergraduate performances will be scheduled on DAY ONE of the conference, Tues. April 14, in the UC auditorium.

Performance Presentation Format Details

  • Performance presentations can include individual or group performances in music, theatre, dance and other creative formats. Performances will run no more than 30 minutes in duration. Performers are invited to check-in early to arrange props or other performance materials, and check equipment. ( Presenters may request equipment needs on the registration form)

Undergraduate Student Lightning Pitch Competition

Undergraduate Student Lightning Pitch Competition will feature two-minute persuasive pitches (2 slides maximum) to propose a research project, service learning project, community engaged project, or creative activity.  Presentations will be evaluated by a panel of community judges. The Undergraduate Lightning Pitch Competition will be scheduled on DAY ONE of the conference, Tues. April 14.

The pitch competition will provide a platform for students to propose an idea for a research, service learning, or community engaged project, or creative activity.  The aim of the pitch is to convince a panel of non-expert judges that your proposed work has high value, and will make an important contribution to society. Students preparing for graduate school or the world of work (that is everybody!) will find this challenge particularly valuable. Space is limited for this  Register Early!

The Undergraduate Lightning Pitch Competition is scheduled from 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM on Tues. April 14, 2020.  Before you register to compete in this event make certain that you are available to be present during 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM on April 14, 2020. 

  • Each competitor will have a maximum of 2 minutes (using a no more than 2 slides- including title slide) to pitch a proposal. 
  • Pitches will run no more than 2 minutes in duration. Competitors will load the slide deck (or other visual components) on to computer in the UC auditorium after check-in.
  • Competitors must check-in and arrive at the UC auditorium no later than 2:15 pm.

TIP: Slide presentations should be stored in multiple formats including on a jump drive, cloud storage, and e-mail to ensure accessibility.

  • Pitches will be evaluated by a panel of community judges.
  • 1st Prize: $100 gift card and a SEARCH Award valued at $1,000 (for continuing UTC students).
  • 2nd Prize: $75 gift card
  • 3rd Prize: $50 gift card
