2019 CANDL Poverty Simulation

The Community Action Poverty Simulation is an interactive immersion experience which sensitizes participants to the realities of poverty. The simulation promotes poverty awareness through role-play by living a simulated month in poverty or with low income. Debriefing post-simulation will increase understanding and inspire local change in perspectives and bias towards poverty.
Be a part of this simulation:
- Participate as a simulated family member. Participants can become a trained facilitator by taking part in training the following day.
- Volunteer as a community resource partner.
This first simulation is a pilot. We hope to have a sustainable interprofessional approach each Fall semester. During the summer pilot, our goal is to have as many students, faculty, and staff as possible participate. We hope that some of those individuals will become trained as facilitators. We will also have an ongoing need for volunteers. If you plan to become a trained facilitator, you will attend two days. To become a trained facilitator, please take part in the simulation as a participant rather than as a volunteer.
Simulation Objectives:
- Participants will develop self-awareness around thoughts and attitudes toward people in poverty.
- Participants will identify social and cultural differences between self and people in poverty.
- Participants will identify practice implications for working with individuals and families in poverty.
