Charlie Mix, GIS Director
Charlie is the GIS Director for UTC and the IGTLab. He oversees GIS project development and management, spatial data analysis, modeling, cartography, GIS application development, partnership coordination, and GIS software, hardware, and data management for UTC's campus and partners. Charlie earned his B.S. in Geography from Jacksonville State University and his professional background stems from the application of geography and GIS for natural resource management and protection. He has worked with numerous conservation organizations, NGOs, and agencies to help answer the question of "where." Charlie has led numerous successful projects utilizing GIS and cartography for conservation and outdoor recreation planning, public health, environmental management, and community prosperity. His cartographic work has received international recognition through awards and publications.
A large influence of what shaped Charlie’s career as a geographer is a love of nature and exploration. Charlie is an avid mountain biker and whitewater kayaker. He also serves on the board of directors for the Southern Off-Road Mountain Biking Association (SORBA Chattanooga) as Advocacy Director, serves on the advisory committee of the Natural Treasures Alliance (a regional conservation partnership) of Thrive Regional Partnership, and served on the Hamilton County COVID-19 Task Force, data subcommittee.
