STEM Awards & Research Opportunities
GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP The Goldwater Scholarship is for outstanding sophomores or juniors in the STEM fields interested in pursuing research in graduate school as well as a research-based future career. Scholarships of up to $7,500 a year are provided to help cover tuition, mandatory fees, books, room and board. Campus deadline in fall for late January national deadline. Requires university nomination.
NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM The NSF GRFP funds graduate study at any accredited graduate institution in the U.S. for eligible STEM fields. National deadlines are in mid-to-late October.
SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, and RESEARCH for TRANSFORMATION (SMART) SCHOLARSHIP Established by the Department of Defense (DoD), the SMART Scholarship for Service Program supports undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. Benefits include tuition, stipend, health insurance, paid summer internships and mentorship. Undergraduates and graduates of all classifications are eligible. National deadline in early December.
NATIONAL DEFENSE SCIENCE & ENGINEERING GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP (NDSEG) The NDSEG was created as a means of increasing the number of U.S. citizens and nationals receiving doctoral degrees in science and engineering disciplines of military importance. Provides three years of full tuition and all mandatory fees, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance. Graduating seniors as well as graduates in their first two years of study are eligible. National deadline in November.
HERTZ FELLOWSHIP The Hertz Fellowship is for the country's most promising students intending to pursue a PhD in applied physical, biological and engineering sciences. It provides five years of funding and encourages innovative research. National deadline in October.
BOREN SUMMER STEM SCHOLARSHIP For all class levels to fund study abroad in non-Western countries on the way to federal government work. National deadline in late January. Requires university nomination.
NOAA ERNEST F. HOLLINGS UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP For sophomores majoring in STEM fields relevant to NOAA's programs and mission. Provides awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for two years of full-time study; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($700/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility, conference attendance, and more. National deadline late January or early February.
UDALL SCHOLARSHIP For sophomores and juniors who plan to pursue careers related to environmental policy. Provides educational costs. Campus deadline in early February; national deadline in early March. Requires university nomination.
KANDERS CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP The Kanders Churchill Scholarship offers outstanding American STEM students the opportunity to pursue a one-year Master's in Public Policy degree at Churchill College, Cambridge. Deadline in October.
