Director Profile

Dr. Trey Straussberger came to UTC having served in the role as interim director of the Office of Competitive Fellowships at Florida Gulf Coast University, an institution he joined in 2017 as an Assistant Professor of African Studies in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. He was previously a Discipline Lecturer at Columbia University in New York and a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Trey received a Bachelor of History and Anthropology from Davidson College in North Carolina in 2005, followed by a trio of degrees from Columbia University: M.A. in History (2010), M.Phil in History (2012) and Ph.D. in African History (2015). He has advised students who have received scholarships from the Fulbright, Goldwater, NSF REU, and Gilman, among others. He also takes a holistic approach to fellowship advising, working with students to identify their personal and professional goals and identifying experiences that will help them achieve those goals, including post-graduate programs such as the Peace Corps, Americorps, EPIK, and Teach for America. When he's not meeting with students, Trey is busy chasing after his four and one-year-old boys and watching the Food Network.
