Clinical Addiction Studies Certificate
The Counselor Education program offers a bachelor’s- and post-bachelor’s certificate in Clinical Addiction Studies (CAS) for undergraduate- and graduate-level students seeking to pursue licensure as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC) in the state of Tennessee. The certificate program provides a foundational understanding of the field of addictions counseling and the coursework is aligned with the Tennessee LADAC educational requirements. However, completion of the certificate does not guarantee eligibility for licensure, as there is clinical hours that must be obtained in addition to the educational requirements. Applications are accepted at any time for this certificate program.
Admission to the certificate program is based on the following:
- Admission to the Undergraduate or Graduate School
- Admission to the Certificate Program
- Successful completion of a high school diploma (for undergraduate students) or completion of a bachelor’s degree (for graduate students)
- One letter of recommendation
- Acknowledgement of the NAADAC Code of Ethics
- Interview with one of the CAS program coordinators
Minimum Requirements:
A minimum of 18 hours of coursework will be required for completion of the certificate. If wanting the LADAC license, it is essential that all courses be completed, as they meet the 270-hour education equivalent set forth by the LADAC board. Faculty advisors and students in the certificate program plan a program of study designed to build on the students’ existing knowledge as well as meet the requirements necessary to pursue licensure in Tennessee.
Initial Steps:
It is recommended that candidates contact the Clinical Addiction Studies program coordinator (Dr. Tyler Oberheim, [email protected]) regarding eligibility for the Clinical Addiction Studies certificate program. Note that completion of coursework does not guarantee licensure as there are clinical hours that must be obtained prior to seeking licensure as a LADAC in Tennessee.
