SPED Resources
These SPED Add-On programs are for teachers with an active teaching license in the state of Tennessee. There are two different pathways you can take:
Mild to Moderate Disabilities Program:
Special Education Interventionist K-8 (144) OR 6-12 (145)
Courses:
- EDSP 5040 - Classroom Management Techniques
Examines techniques for managing attention and behavior in the classroom; approaches discussed include psychoeducational and behavioral management. May be registered as EPSY 5040.
- EDSP 5170 - Strategies for Inclusion
Examines the concepts surrounding inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the regular classroom; explores methods and strategies for developing individualized programs designed to promote successful integration. Prerequisites: EDSP 5150 or Department Head approval.
- EDUC 5250 - Planning, Assessing and Instructing Diverse Learners
An introduction to planning, assessing, and instructing practices routinely used in contemporary education settings. Both theoretical and practical aspects of design for learning in today's diverse and inclusive settings will be emphasized, focusing on instructional design, unit/lesson development. assessment design, teaching strategies. and adapting/differentiating instruction for diverse/inclusive learners. Technological innovations in educational practice will be considered.

Moderate to Severe Disabilities Program:
Special Education Comprehensive K-12 (461)
Courses:
- EDSP 5060 - Program Design and Curriculum Strategies for Exceptional Learners
Examines research on effective teaching/learning in relation to special education; overviews principles of curriculum design and examines various models useful in the education of individuals with disabilities; discussion of issues related to cultural diversity. Field component included.
- EDSP 5170 - Strategies for Inclusion
