The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the Chattanooga/Hamilton County area. Severe thunderstorms are expected late this afternoon (5/20/2025) and into the overnight hours. Damaging winds, as well as a chance of large hail and tornadoes, are possible with this storm.

The Department of Public Safety is actively monitoring conditions with City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and State of Tennessee first-responder agencies.

UTC Community:

Please be advised that Vine Street, from Palmetto Street to the University Greenway, will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic for Freshman Orientation on the following dates:

UTC Hosts Emergency Response Training from 5/6/25 - 5/9/25

UTC Community:

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) Department of Public Safety (DPS) and UTC Police Department (UTCPD) will host the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) training on May 6-7, 2025 and May 8-9, 2025 at the Metropolitan Building. Sponsored by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC), this course teaches police, fire, and EMS professionals how to respond to and care for patients during an emergency. On May 7, 2025 and May 9, 2025, scenarios involving simulated armed intruder situations will occur. Individuals in or near the Metropolitan Building may hear noises related to the exercise.  

No action is required by members of the UTC or Chattanooga community. This message is to advise the community that this exercise will be taking place.

UTC-ALERT: Timely Warning – Assault and Aggravated Criminal Trespassing [4/17/2025]

This is a Timely Warning regarding crimes that were reported to have occurred on University-owned, controlled, or adjacent property. 

The UTC Police Department (UTCPD) has received several reports regarding alleged criminal conduct by a former member of the UTC community: 

• On Monday, April 14, 2025, a student reported that an individual was found in the laundry room of Lockmiller Apartments (720 Oak Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403) without permission. The student reported that the individual, later identified as the accused, inappropriately touched her during that time.
• On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, UTC staff reported that the accused had entered the University Center (651 Vine Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403) and visited one or more offices during business hours the prior week (April 8, 2025 or April 9, 2025). The accused was previously trespassed from University-owned and controlled property in April 2024.
• On Thursday, April 17, 2025, a student reported that on the evening of Wednesday, April 16, 2025, while working in the UTC Library (600 Douglas Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403), they observed an individual, later identified as the accused, taking potentially inappropriate photos of females.  

The accused has been identified as Mr. Gabriel Montesinos Corzo, 28, of Chattanooga, TN. UTCPD took Mr. Montesinos Corzo into custody today, April 17, 2025, without incident. He has been charged with Assault (T.C.A. § 39-13-101) and Aggravated Criminal Trespassing (T.C.A. § 39-14-406) in connection with the incidents reported to UTCPD. Mr. Montesinos Corzo was also arrested on a warrant for Assault (T.C.A. § 39-13-101) related to an incident reported to the Chattanooga Police Department (CPD).

UTC-ALERT: Timely Warning - Motor Vehicle Theft, Burglary, & Attempted Theft [4/1/2025]

This is a Timely Warning regarding a crime that was reported to have occurred on University-owned, controlled, or adjacent property. 

The UTC Police Department has received numerous reports regarding Motor Vehicle-related crimes including Theft, Burglary, and Attempted Theft:

• On Saturday, March 29, 2025, a student reported that their vehicle was stolen from UTC Parking Lot #51 (747 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403). The victim reported last seeing their vehicle on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at approximately 5:00 PM. The vehicle is described as a red Kia Sorento with a Tennessee license plate.
• On Saturday, March 29, 2025, a student reported that the rear passenger window of their vehicle had been shattered while parked in UTC Parking Lot #59 (744 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403). Upon checking the vehicle, the student found that their personal property had been stolen.The victim reported last checking on their vehicle on Friday, March 28, 2025 at approximately 1:00 PM.
• On Saturday, March 29, 2025, a student reported that the rear passenger window of their vehicle had been shattered while parked in UTC Parking Lot #47-3 (841 E. 8th Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403). When the officer inspected the vehicle, they found that the ignition had been removed in an attempt to steal the vehicle. The victim last reported checking on their vehicle on Friday, March 28, 2025 at approximately 11:00 AM.

Public Safety Advisory: Weather for 3/30/25 - 3/31/25

UTC Community:

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the Chattanooga/Hamilton County area. Isolated storms are possible this evening (3/30/2025), with a line of strong to severe storms moving into the area late tonight through Monday morning (3/31/2025). The greatest threat will be on Monday morning between 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM with the potential for damaging winds and large hail.

The Department of Public Safety is actively monitoring conditions with City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and State of Tennessee first-responder agencies.

Public Safety Advisory: Smoke / Air Quality [3/27/2025]

UTC Community:

An area of light to moderately dense smoke has been observed around the Chattanooga area. This smoke is the result of current and previous wildfires in Tennessee and Georgia. 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, using data collected from the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, currently report the air quality in Chattanooga as "moderate." While a moderate air quality level is considered acceptable, it may pose a risk to individuals with health-related concerns. 

Consider the following safety tips:

• When outdoors, take it easy during smoky times to reduce the amount of smoke you inhale, and avoid strenuous activities such as running.
• If you have health-related concerns:
  • Stay inside with the doors and windows closed.
  • Use a portable air cleaner to reduce indoor air pollution.
  • Avoid contributing to indoor air pollution by burning candles, frying food, etc.

Public Safety Advisory: Limited Access to Pedestrian Walkway between UTC Library and Mac Gym [3/27/2025]

UTC Community:

The Department of Facilities Planning and Management (FPM) has advised that the pedestrian walkway between the UTC Library and Maclellan Gymnasium (nearest the intersection of Vine Street and Douglas Street) will be temporarily limited. This is due to planned roofing repairs to Maclellan Gymnasium and unscheduled emergency repairs to the campus hot water system at this location. The areas have been partitioned with fencing, barricades, and caution tape. FPM hopes to reopen a portion of this area on or after April 7, 2025.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 3/15/2025 at 7:15 PM and a Tornado Watch until 3/16/2025 at 1:00 AM for the Chattanooga / Hamilton County, TN area.

What does a Severe Thunderstorm Warning mean?
Severe weather has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar. Warnings indicate imminent danger to life and property. Take shelter in a substantial building.

What does a Tornado Watch mean?
Tornadoes are possible in the area. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching.

The Department of Public Safety is continuing to monitor the storm with other City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County, and State of Tennessee first-responder agencies.

Winds with gusts up to 70 mph are possible. On Saturday, March 15, 2025, severe storms are predicted, with the greatest threat expected on Saturday night. Significant damaging winds are likely, as well as a threat for tornadoes, hail, and flash flooding.

UTC-ALERT: Timely Warning - Assault/Burglary [3/3/2025]

This is a Timely Warning regarding a crime that was reported to have occurred on University-owned, controlled, or adjacent property. 

On Friday, February 28, 2025, at approximately 3:30 PM, the UTC Police Department received a delayed report of a Simple Assault and Aggravated Burglary. The victim, a UTC student, reported that on February 28, 2025, at approximately 2:00 AM, she was in her apartment at West Campus Housing when an unknown suspect entered the open apartment door. The victim stated that the suspect, described as a white male wearing a camouflage hat, then sprayed her with Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) Spray (commonly known as "Pepper Spray" ) and quickly left the apartment.

Public Safety Advisory: Erlanger Chattanooga Marathon [2/28/2025]

UTC Community:

On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the Erlanger Chattanooga Marathon will pass through campus. Numerous roads will be closed or partially closed around campus including:

• Southbound lane of Mabel Street from E. 3rd Street to Douglas Street
• Eastbound lane of Mocs Alumni Drive from Douglas Street to Palmetto Street
• Palmetto Street from Mocs Alumni Drive to Vine Street
• Fortwood Street from Palmetto Street to Fortwood Place
• Fortwood Place from Fortwood Street to Vine Street
• Vine Street from Fortwood Place to Douglas Street
• Eastbound lane of Vine Street from Douglas Street to Lindsay Street

Additionally, there will be no parking on Sunday, March 2, 2025 from 3:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the following areas: 

• Southbound lane of Mabel Street from E. 3rd Street to Douglas Street
• Eastbound lane of Mocs Alumni Drive from Douglas Street to Palmetto Street
• Eastbound lane of Vine Street from Douglas Street to Lindsay Street

UTC-ALERT: Timely Warning – Motor Vehicle Theft [2/23/2025]

This is a Timely Warning regarding a crime that was reported to have occurred on University-owned, controlled, or adjacent property. 

On Sunday, February 23, 2025, at approximately 1:40 PM, the UTC Police Department received a report of a motor vehicle theft from UTC Parking Lot #47-3 (841 E. 8th Street, Chattanooga, TN 37403). The victim reported last seeing their vehicle on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at approximately 9:00 PM; the theft is believed to have occurred sometime between Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 9:00 PM and Sunday, February 23, 2025 at 1:00 PM. The vehicle is described as a white Nissan Rouge with a Tennessee license plate.

Normal Operations Resume on 2/20/2025

UTC Community:

The University will resume normal operations on Thursday, February 20, 2025. Students, employees, and affiliates are encouraged to be mindful of their personal safety while traveling to and navigating around campus. While roads and walkways have been treated to mitigate hazards, take it slow as some areas may continue to be icy. 

• Students who are unable to make it to campus safely due to local road conditions should inform their course instructors as soon as possible and seek reasonable accommodations. Students will be expected to complete all work within the limits set by their faculty member.

Modification to Campus Operations for 2/19/2025 (Updated)

UTC Community:

The safety of the University community is always our top priority. While we are not experiencing any major impacts at this time, out of an abundance of caution the University will further modify campus operations during this weather event.

Modification to Campus Operations

• Wednesday, February 19, 2025
  • All classes and activities for Wednesday, February 19, 2025 are CANCELLED.
    • For employees, this will be an unscheduled administrative closure.
      • "Essential Employees" should report to campus as directed by their supervisor.
      • Supervisors in all areas should plan for the continuity of critical services and engage required personnel for remote work as needed.
  • Athletics will continue to host the Men's Basketball game vs. West Carolina University (WCU) at 7:00 PM in McKenzie Arena. For updates, please visit gomocs.com.
  • Mocs Dining (Aramark) will operate using the following schedule:
    • Main Campus
      • Crossroads Dining Hall: 7:30 AM - 9:00 PM
      • University Center Food Court: CLOSED
      • Freshens: CLOSED
      • Starbucks: CLOSED
    • South Campus
      • Subway: 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM
      • South Campus POD: 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM
    • West Campus
      • Chef Express: 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM
      • Einstein Bros Bagels: 7:30 AM - 7:00 PM
      • West Campus POD: 10:00 AM - 12:00 AM
  • Campus Recreation
    • Aquatic and Recreation Center (ARC) will be OPEN 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM. The pool will be CLOSED.
    • Sports Complex will be CLOSED.
  • Mocs Express (Campus Shuttle) and other CARTA buses will operate on their normal routes and schedule, dependent on road conditions.
  • Mail Services will be CLOSED.
  • University Center will be CLOSED.
  • UTC Bookstore will be CLOSED.
  • UTC Library will be CLOSED.
  • All events scheduled to take place are CANCELLED. Organizers will communicate if these events are to be rescheduled and, if so, on what dates and times.
     
• Thursday, February 20, 2025
  • No changes to campus operations as of the time of this message. Further updates will be sent as needed.

Emergencies, including physical and mental health:

• Students living ON-CAMPUS should call the UTC Police at (423) 425-HELP/4357.
• Students living OFF-CAMPUS should call 911.
• Students, faculty, and staff experiencing a mental health crisis should call the UTC CARE line at (423) 425-CARE/2273.

The University community is encouraged to be mindful of personal safety, particularly while outdoors, during this inclement weather.

Modification to Campus Operations for 2/19/2025

UTC Community:

The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecasted a wintry mix of rain and snow overnight tonight (2/18) and into the early morning hours tomorrow (2/19). Any snow accumulation is expected to be less than half an inch.

The safety of the University community is always our top priority. Out of an abundance of caution, the University will modify campus operations during this weather event.

Modification to Campus Operations

• Tuesday, February 18, 2025
  No changes to campus operations.
   
• Wednesday, February 19, 2025
  • All in-person classes and activities for Wednesday, February 19, 2025 are DELAYED until 10:00 AM.
    • Faculty may opt to hold classes occurring before 10:00 AM via an alternative modality (e.g., Asynchronous; Synchronous via Zoom, Teams, or other platform).
    • For employees, this will be an unscheduled administrative closure until 10:00 AM.
      • “Essential Employees” should report to campus as directed by their supervisor.
      • Supervisors in all areas should plan for the continuity of critical services and engage required personnel for remote work as needed.
• Other Modifications:
  • Mocs Dining (Aramark) will operate on their regular, schedule with the exception of the University Center Food Court, which will open at 9:00 AM.
  • Campus Recreation will open the Aquatic and Recreation Center (ARC) at 10:00 AM.
  • Mocs Express (Campus Shuttle) and other CARTA buses will operate on their normal routes and schedule, dependent on road conditions.
  • Mail Services will OPEN at 10:00 AM
  • University Center will OPEN at 9:00 AM

Personal Safety

• Students who are unable to make it to campus safely due to local road conditions should inform their course instructors as soon as possible and seek reasonable accommodations. Students will be expected to complete all work within the limits set by their faculty member
• Faculty members who are unable to make it to campus safely due to local road conditions should work with their Department Head/School Director as described by the UTC Faculty Handbook.
• Staff members who are unable to make it to campus safely due to local road conditions should contact their supervisor.
