University High FAQs

Any current sophomore student zoned for the Hamilton County school district with a minumin 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is eligible to apply and be considered for enrollment in University High.

Students must also submit the following during the application process:

Two (2) letters of recommendation

• At least one (1) letter must come from a Hamilton County school district employee (educator, principal, school counselor). The second letter can also come from a Hamilton County school district employee or a community leader who can speak to the habits, skills, and traits that highlight the student’s ability to be successful in this program.

No, University High students will not live on UTC’s campus or have access to residence halls.

University High is designed to serve students and their families at no cost. Through shared collaborations between UTC and Hamilton County Schools, the cost of the program is supported financially through grants and shared resources. However, students are responsible for maintaining the proper criteria to remain eligible for the Dual Enrollment Grant. If students become ineligible for the grant, student fees and college classes will now be the responsibility of the student.

Students will have the choice to ride a public school bus to campus, be dropped off by another licensed driver, or drive themselves. Hamilton County Schools will provide transportation via public school buses that are estimated to arrive to campus at 9:10 EST each morning and depart from campus at 4:30 EST each afternoon. Designated drop-off and pick-up locations on campus will also be designated for students being driven by a parent, family member, or friend.

Students will be permitted to drive themselves to and from campus with permission from University High and their families. If a student chooses to drive themselves to campus, they will be responsible for costs associated with parking on campus. For more information on parking on campus, please visit here.

Since University High students are UTC students, they will have access to the Mocs Express (campus shuttle) that has hourly pick-up and drop-off locations throughout campus and the surrounding area.

Yes! Lunch will be offered on campus each day for University High students.

University High is designed to balance student autonomy and exploration with guidance and instruction. Prior to the start of each school year, University High students will participate in orientations and trainings to help prepare them for integrating into a college campus community both academically and socially.

All personnel (both HCS and UTC) also participate in annual trainings that help them maintain a safe and productive learning environment for all students.

 UTC’s Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs has professionals trained specifically to support students through their search for a university home. Resources include:
