Workshop Overview
The UTC World History APSI is designed to meet the needs of high school AP teachers. This will be accomplished through a survey that will be sent out in advance for the participants to help set the exact agenda. During the course of the week, the instructor will address the new requirements for APWH by College Board including the syllabus, new changes to what the students must know, and things the students do not need to know. Session time will be spent working on how to teach students to write the required essays as well as how to score them. Examples will be available and used during the week for practice scoring. All teachers prefer having help making assignments, and we will work on creating those as a class for all to use in their own classrooms. Each participant is encouraged to bring an assignment they have used in their class, have thought of but need help finishing, need to adapt to the AP curriculum, or just like a great deal and wish to share. Ideas for outside readings, ways to use peer review, assignments, resources, and fun activities will also be shared in the sessions.
Due to the online nature of the course, there will be a mixture of live sessions and “on your own” learning periods. Assignments will be given during the live session to be worked on during the breaks for use during the next live session. The instructor will be available via phone during the break periods for any participant who needs help or clarification.

How Online Workshops Will Work
No one wants to sit and watch a 32-hour long webinar, so we are working closely with our consultants to develop a modified course schedule that allows you greater flexibility, but still gives you the knowledge and skills you need.
Live-online instruction will be conducted through Zoom while asynchronous learning assignments will be managed through Canvas, the University’s learning management system (LMS).
Once you register, we will provide you with more details on how to access the platforms as well as your materials.

Meet the Instructor
Joseph Paddenburg
Joseph Paddenburg graduated from Clemson University in 1993 with a BA in Secondary Education—History. After a semester of substitute work, Paddenburg was hired to teach at the Opportunity School in Danville, Va. It was a program of last resort for many students, and he was the social studies department, teaching every subject offered. After a few years, Paddenburg transferred over to the main school—George Washington High School—where he taught mostly World History, Geography, and Government. In 2001, Paddenburg and his wife moved to Greenville, SC and he began teaching at Southside High School, focusing on Government/Economics, World Geography, and World History. AP World was added to his resume in 2006, and he has been mainly teaching it to freshmen ever since. Four years ago, APUSH and IB History of the Americas was added to his schedule. Upon reading that College Board needed readers to score exams, Joseph put in his application and was hired for the 2010 read in Ft. Collins, Colorado; he has been part of the process every year since. For last year’s online read, he served as a table leader. In the spring of 2015, Paddenburg was part of the piloting of AP Insight for World History and was invited to become a consultant. That fall, he was asked to be part of the consultant team for all of AP World History. Paddenburg has been happily married to Michelle for 25 years, and they have three kids and one spoiled rescue pup.
