Workshop Overview
The AP Human Geography workshop is designed to offer teachers an opportunity to become more familiar with—and better prepared to teach—the course. Each unit of the Human Geography course will be addressed through a brief analysis of the major topics, sample lessons, and additional lesson ideas. Other aspects of the workshop include the use and value of fieldwork, a discussion of textbooks and ancillary resources, and a review of questions, rubrics, and sample answers from previous examinations. A significant amount of time will be dedicated to familiarizing the participants with the changes that the College Board has implemented starting in the 2019-2020 school year. These changes are designed to provide new opportunities and resources for both teachers and students. The matter of helping the students become as well prepared as possible for the exam will be an underlying theme of the workshop. There will be some short homework assignments during the Institute.

What You Will Learn
- How to get the students thinking like geographers (thinking spatially)
- How to prepare students for both the multiple choice and FRQ questions on the exam
- How to score/group FRQs like a Reader
- How to manage the large number of topics by focusing on Big Ideas of each unit
- How to help students make connections within units and how this will help them answer “unexpected” multiple choice and FRQ questions
- How to emphasize the significance of scale throughout the course
- How to deal with the significance of vocabulary without memorization
How You Will Benefit
- Understand the nuances of AP Human Geography
- Understand the CED—the new resources available for students and teachers to help diagnose and assist needs in content or skills
- Obtain lesson ideas from the workshop instructor and from each other, and discover MANY resources to help you not have to “reinvent the wheel” in order to reach your students and keep them engaged
- Understand how to teach and assess FRQs in your classroom with authority and (some) precision (it is an art form, not a science)
- Address your concerns for the class, in order to be ready for the fall

How Online Workshops Will Work
No one wants to sit and watch a 32-hour long webinar, so we are working closely with our consultants to develop a modified course schedule that allows you greater flexibility, but still gives you the knowledge and skills you need.
Live-online instruction will be conducted through Zoom while asynchronous learning assignments will be managed through Canvas, the University’s learning management system (LMS).
Once you register, we will provide you with more details on how to access the platforms as well as your materials.
