Workshop Overview
The AP Statistics Course and Exam Description (CED) offers a sound framework and resources for constructing quality instruction. The course is packaged into nine “Units”, each containing a wealth of specificity and detail about what AP students will be expected to know and do. At the 30,000-foot level, participants will review the big ideas of AP Statistics; at the 300-foot level, participants will engage with classroom-ready materials that focus on specific thinking and writing skills necessary for success in the course and on the AP Statistics exam. Statistics is an active endeavor, and the resources given will engage AP students and get them "out of their seats." The use of technology such as graphing calculators and statistical software will be stressed throughout the week. Communication—the presentation of an effective argument about interpreting data—is an essential part of doing and teaching statistics; the workshop will highly emphasize discussion and interpretation!

How Online Workshops Will Work
No one wants to sit and watch a 32-hour long webinar, so we are working closely with our consultants to develop a modified course schedule that allows you greater flexibility, but still gives you the knowledge and skills you need.
Live-online instruction will be conducted through Zoom while asynchronous learning assignments will be managed through Canvas, the University’s learning management system (LMS).
Once you register, we will provide you with more details on how to access the platforms as well as your materials.

Meet the Instructor
Chris Olsen
Chris is a two-time past member of the AP Statistics Test Development Committee and recently joined the 16-year club of serving as a table leader and question leader for the AP Statistics Exam. After teaching statistics at George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for over 24 years—and AP Statistics from its inception until 2012—he passed the baton. For the past 10 years, he enjoyed the role of assistant professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Grinnell College where he taught calculus, experimental design, and applied statistics classes. As of July 1, 2023, he is recently retired and catching up on reading. He was a math and philosophy major in his undergraduate years at Iowa State University; he concentrated on statistics, computer programming, psychometrics, and test development in his graduate years at the University of Iowa.
He has been involved nationally and internationally in workshops and conferences mostly relating to statistics for over 35 years. He has reviewed materials for The Mathematics Teacher, the AP Central website, The American Statistician, and The Journal of the American Statistical Association. He also serves on the editorial board of the Teaching Statistics journal. He is a co-author, with Roxy Peck and Tom Short, of the Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis—now in its 6th edition—, and Statistics Learning From Data, which is now in its 2nd (updated) edition with a 3rd edition in the works.
Current projects involve moderating the College Board's AP Statistics Teacher Community and maintaining a freeware computer program, SPLAT ("Statistical Package for Learning and Teaching") designed to support the teaching of AP Statistics.
