At the UTC Nanoengineering Center, faculty investigate how nanoscale structures shape the
performance of materials and systems. Through computational modeling and AI-guided
research, they develop technologies addressing challenges in energy, health, and national
security.
Advancing Research at the Nanoscale
The UTC Nanoengineering Center is a multidisciplinary research hub advancing nanoscale science and engineering at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The center brings together faculty across engineering and science disciplines to develop technologies addressing challenges in energy, health and national security.
Current investigations include energy storage materials, biodegradable material systems and thermal protection technologies designed for demanding environments. This work connects fundamental nanoscale science with engineering applications in advanced materials, manufacturing and energy systems.
The center is directed by mechanical engineering faculty member Dr. Murat Barisik and builds on collaboration across UTC as well as partnerships with organizations including the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the UT–Oak Ridge Innovation Institute. The center also provides research opportunities for students preparing to work in emerging nano-enabled technologies.
