Civil Engineering's Applied Materials Research Center
UTC's Civil Engineering Applied Materials Center has the equipment and expertise to provide research on the following products:
- Aggregate
- Asphalt
- Portland Cement Concrete
- Soils
- Wood
The center has a considerable inventory of equipment available for testing including:
- Superpave
- Los Angeles Abrasion
- Compressive
- Flexural
- Tensile
- Residual Strength
Dr. Mbakisya Onyango brings considerable experience to the asphalt laboratory. Brent Rollins, Director of the Applied Materials Center, is widely regarded as an expert in Portland cement concrete (PCC).
Current research includes determining the effectiveness of biomass ash in PCC, optimization of coarse aggregate in PCC, and blast mitigating chemically bonded ceramics.
Critical equipment is needed to continue the mission of the center. Plans include the acquisition of the region's only solar reflectometer for testing light reflectivity of PCC for LEED requirements, construction of a state of the art curing room, and construction of an accelerated pavement testing facility.
How you can help:
- Donate equipment
- Partner with UTC to conduct research for stipend
- Monetary gift
- Naming opportunities are also available for the three labs that comprise the center, ranging from $250,000 - $500,000
