Eighth Annual Introduction to Asia Conference

*5:30pm-7:00pm: Special off-campus Korea program at the Creative Discovery Museum for elementary and middle school teachers, education majors, and others interested in the Korea exhibit. Please email Jeffrey Melnik at [email protected] to reserve a spot for the exhibit. Spaces are limited and will be filled on a "first come, first served" basis.
The UTC Asia Program is hosting the eighth annual Introduction to Asia Conference. Support is provided by the Freeman Foundation (the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia), the Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, the Creative Discovery Museum, the Apgar Foundation, the ROTC Military Science and Leadership Program, the College of Health, Education, and Professional Studies, and the UTC Office of International Students. The program will take place in the University Center Auditorium with a special off-campus program afterwards at the Creative Discovery Museum.
This year’s conference features four sessions on Asia-related topics and a special off-campus museum exhibit. Our keynote speaker, Consul-General Seong-jin Kim from The Consulate-General of the Republic of Korea in Atlanta, will discuss the relationship between the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and the U.S. Other sessions include: Sean N. Kalic, Department of Military History, US Army Command and Staff College, “The Korean War, The Cold War, and American National Interests” and Takeo Suzuki, Executive Director, UTC Office of International Students, “Japanese Culture Now and Then: From Samurai to Pokemon.” The conference also includes Asian and American student panel participants discussing what they’ve learned through experiencing Asian and American cultures.
After the conference, the UTC Asia Program and the Creative Discovery Museum will host a special visit to the museum's exhibit “Heart and Seoul: Growing Up in Korea” from 5:30pm to 7:00pm for elementary and middle school teachers, educators, and the general public. Admission is free for all members of the university community, educators, and members of the general public who wish to attend and refreshments will be served. Conference attendees are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible as their schedule allows.
