Behavior
Acceptable Behavior
All program participants are expected to conduct themselves in a mature and responsible manner. It is important to respect the culture and customs of the country in which we are guests, remembering that by courteous conduct and positive attitudes we can be good ambassadors representing our native countries. It is also important that everyone behave as cooperatively and as responsibly as possible to ensure the comfort and safety of our study group.
Generally disruptive or irresponsible actions like failing to follow residence hall rules, failing to observe quiet hours (10:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.), or failing to provide accurate information when necessary will be dealt with in the following way:
First Offense:
After a first offense, students will meet with one of the faculty members.
Second Offense:
After a second offense, students will receive a written letter of reprimand and may be asked to report daily to one of the faculty members for a specified length of time. If no further offenses occur, the letter will be destroyed. If, however, there should be additional offenses, the letter will become part of the students' files and will be forwarded to the home institution(s).
Third Offense:
After a third offense, the faculty members will telephone the students' parents, if appropriate, to obtain their assistance in correcting the students' behavior and to inform the parents that the students will be expelled from the program after a next offense. If students are beyond the age of parental oversight, enrolling institutions will be informed of the problem and will be asked to assist.
Fourth Offense:
For a fourth offense, the students will be expelled from the program, with no refund.
The following behaviors are considered serious enough to warrant immediate dismissal from the program. Students who commit such infractions will be expelled from the program and will receive no refund of any costs:
- Theft, vandalism or any other criminal behavior
- Abuse of alcohol and/or drugs
- Lewd or promiscuous conduct
- Sexual harassment
Appropriate disciplinary measures for any misconduct will be decided by a committee consisting of a program director, the faculty members, and one other administrator.
Dismissal means returning to the U.S. The Program bears no costs incurred by the student from the resulting change of travel plans. The Program director or a faculty member will see the expelled student to the airport gate, and there all responsibility on the part of the University and its agents ends.
