UTC Symphony Orchestra - November 6, 2018

The UTC Symphony Orchestra will present a free Fall Concert in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall in the UTC Fine Arts Building at 7:30 p.m. on November 6. It features Five, a composition by Dr. Kenyon Wilson, Interim Chair of the Division of Music, to commemorate the five soldiers killed in Chattanooga in 2015. Also featured is the performance of principal hornist Christine Pope in Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3. The concert begins with the English Folk Song Suite written by Ralph Vaughan Williams, a well-known English composer and folk song collector who volunteered as an ambulance driver for the Royal Army in World War I, which ended 100 years ago November 11. It concludes with Capriccio Italien, a piece by Tchaikovsky that was conceived during his visit to Rome and includes richly contrasting folk themes and dance melodies. This 65-member college/community orchestra includes university music majors and non-majors from UTC and Chattanooga State, UTC music faculty members, area music educators, and other talented amateur and professional musicians from the region. The orchestra is conducted by Sandy Morris.
Christine Pope is a native of Dalton, Georgia. She attended Florida State University, where she studied with Bill Capps and received Bachelor of Music degrees in Music Theory and Horn Performance. Christine also holds a Master of Music degree in Horn Performance from the University of Connecticut. Christine has performed with orchestras throughout the United States including the Eastern Connecticut Symphony, The Napa Valley Symphony, the Mendocino Music Festival Orchestra, the Chattanooga Symphony, the Rome Symphony, and the Gadsden Symphony. She currently plays principal horn in the UTC Symphony as well as the Cleveland Orchestra of Tennessee and appears in frequent solo and chamber music performances. She teaches piano and brass at the Creative Arts Guild in Dalton and has many years of experience as a piano technician, tuning and repairing pianos. Christine also received a Master of Chinese Medicine degree from Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine in Sugar Grove, North Carolina and owns and practices acupuncture as Life Gate Acupuncture in Dalton, Georgia.
A former Fulbright Scholar to Azerbaijan, composer Kenyon Wilson is Professor and Interim Chair of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is the winner of the 2014 Heartland Symphony Orchestra Composition Contest and the 2013 Hillcrest Wind Ensemble Composition Contest. Dr. Wilson has received commissions from the University of North Dakota, Hokusho University (Japan), Morehead State University, Tennessee Technological University, Charlotte Tuba Ensemble, International Music Camp in North Dakota, and the International Tuba/Euphonium Association. His recent work, Five, written in response to the July 2015 terrorist attack in Chattanooga, was a finalist for the American Prize in Composition and winner of the 2016 Carolyn Thompson and Roger Brown Community Engagement Award. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education at Tennessee Technological University, a Master of Music Theory degree at Baylor University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Georgia. Principal tubist of the Augusta Symphony and Tuscaloosa Symphony orchestras, he has performed solo recitals in the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia, and serves on the Board of Directors for the International Tuba/Euphonium Association.
