The annual BFA Senior Thesis Exhibition is the capstone achievement of graduating BFA studio majors, comprising a public exhibition and artist lecture series, which represents the culmination of two years of intensive artistic and intellectual development for the department’s Bachelor of Fine Arts candidates. This year’s class is a cohort of 39 artists from four BFA studio concentrations— graphic design, painting & drawing, photography & media art, and sculpture. The resulting diverse and conceptually challenging work is proof of how human connection and curiosity prevails through artistic inquiry. Show 1 features 20 artists and is on view March 29-April 8th; Show 2 features 19 artists and is on view April 12-22nd.

“This year’s senior class artistically responded to and were affected by the last two and a half years of pandemic conditions, from quarantine and stay at home orders in 2020, to the pandemic’s lingering effects on mental and social health, negotiating one’s identity and renegotiating relationships with others, rethinking our values around public and private spaces, to exposing the fallacies of online platforms like social media feeds,” says Rachel Reese, director and curator of the ICA.

Professor Angie To, Head of the Department of Art, says that “The BFA exhibitions are always a highly anticipated moment of celebration. Not only is it the culmination of years of hard work, but it is also a threshold which marks the beginning of the varied and much anticipated futures of the students whose work is featured here. More than ever the world needs artists; people to articulate and make visible the joy, beauty, bewildering pain, and tragedy of each day through all the myriad vehicles of expression available to us…It is an act of love and conviction that the painstaking process of creating, of communicating ideas, and building visual connections are radical methods of resisting apathy and weaving the social connections that we all need to persevere in challenging times.”

To, new to leading the department in 2021, continues that “while I am a new member of the UTC Art community, I have quickly come to appreciate the vibrancy of the program and the mutual dedication of faculty, students, and staff as we strive to support each other and make the work we do relevant and inspiring.”
