Chemistry Fun Day at Creative Discovery Museum (Oct 26, 2019)
To celebrate science on Chemistry Fun Day, Creative Discovery Museum participated in fascinating experiments involving chemical reactions in connection with National Chemistry Week. On Saturday October 26, 2019, between 12 and 4pm, 14 Chemistry Club members presented hands on chemical reaction experiments on the museum floor for 100+ children including our own Abbi, Kepler, Katherine, and Kristine. The projects included Volcano/Jack-O-Lantern, Building a Battery, Chemistry is Colorful, Nature of Dye, Sublimation Bubbles, and Elephant’s toothpaste.
Outreach Activity at Battle Academy (Aug 16, 2019)
On August 16th, the Multiage classroom teachers (Ms. Dorothy Love and Ms. Ashleigh Snyder) from Battle Academy and UTC Chemistry faculty (Drs. Titus Albu and Jisook Kim) got together to provide a hands-on chemistry activity with 39 kids (Mixture of kindergarteners and first graders). Every Friday, the Multiage class at Battle Academy celebrates Fun Friday with various topics, and the topic for the first Fun Friday was “Scientists”. Being chemists, we realized this would be a great opportunity for us to provide a hands-on chemistry activity with kids, and the theme was Acid-Base reaction. We used commonly found, safe house-hold items such as vinegar and baking soda with food dye which added a colorful fun into the reaction. The activity started with Ms. Love’s introduction about what scientists do. A demo was given by Titus as he added acid into base. Finally, kids got to add acid into base, while making a fizzy foam or a volcano as they called it. At the end, we did not forget about washing hands following a safety procedure. They were all excited and learned what chemists do.
