Chemistry Scholarships and Awards
At UTC, chemistry majors have many different scholarships for which they can apply. These can be awarded in addition to, and on top of, university scholarship money.
You must be a current UTC chemistry major and engaged in chemistry course work. Scholarship recipients and awardees will be announced at the annual Chemistry and Physics Awards Ceremony held in April.

The deadline for the 2024-2025 scholarship application is March 1, 2024.

Below are descriptions of some of the scholarships and awards available.
Scholarships amounts range from $500 - $2,000 annually. (based on both need and merit)
- Marvin Anthony: Given to rising juniors or seniors based on academic performance and service to the department. Preference given to chemistry majors with industrial interests. In honor of Marvin L. Anthony, class of 1926.
- Murray Raney: Given to a rising junior or senior based on academic performance and service to the department. Preference given to chemistry majors with graduate school or industrial interests. Sponsored by W. R. Grace and Company, in honor of Murray Raney, local inventor of Raney© Nickel catalysts.
- Charles Robert Thomas Pre-Medicine: Given to a rising junior or senior based on academic performance and service to the department. This student should be interested in being a medical doctor. In honor of the late Dr. Charles Robert Thomas, a well-loved Chattanooga physician.
- Mr. and Mrs. Eugene M. Thomasson Pre-Medicine: Given to a rising senior based on academic performance and service to the department. This student should be interested in being a medical doctor.
- Marjorie Higdon Textbook: Given to an outstanding chemistry major at any level and based on need. In honor of Marjorie Fox Higdon, class of 1947.
- Dr. Don J. Russell: Given to a rising junior or senjor chemistry major based on academic performance. In honor of Dr. Don J. Russell, UC alum and 1954 graduate of UT College of Medicine.
- Santiago Family Biochemistry: Given to an outstanding student with preference given to a non-traditional student in BS Chemistry: Biochemistry. Student must have a minimum 3.0 Chemistry GPA and be a rising Junior or Senior. Sponsored by the family of Dr. Manuel Santiago.
- Alan Zinaman Scholarship: Given to a rising junior or senior student who has been active in research and is interested in graduate school in a chemistry-related field. In honor of Alan Louis Zinaman, class of 1985.
Awards (based on merit only) - No application is necessary for the awards.
- ACS Local Section: Given to a senior based on service to the department, academic achievement, and interest in a career in chemistry. Sponsored by the Chattanooga Section of the American Chemical Society.
- Gregory Grant Award in Inorganic Chemistry: Given to an outstanding student in inorganic chemistry. In honor of Dr. Gregory Grant, longtime inorganic chemistry professor at UTC.
- Student Affiliates Service Award: Given to a student member based on exceptional service and contributions to the ACS Student Affiliates.
- Teaching Assistantship Award: Given to an outstanding teaching assistant.
- Swan Award (CRC Handbook): Given to an outstanding freshman for academic performance and service to the department. In honor of Dr. William O. Swan, chemistry instructor (1941-1968).
- Edwards Award: Given to an outstanding sophomore and junior for academic performance and service to the department. In honor of Dr. John William Edwards, professor of chemistry and department head (1918-1941).
- McNeely Award: Given to an outstanding senior who is planning graduate studies in chemistry or in related areas. In honor of Dr. Robert McNeely, longtime professor of chemistry.
- Waddell Award: Given to an outstanding junior or senior for academic performance and service to the department. Preference given to a student who plans post-graduate study. In honor of Dr. Thomas G. Waddell, longtime professor of organic chemistry.
- Gross Award: Given to an outstanding senior for academic performance and service to the department. In honor of Dr. Benjamin H. Gross, longtime department head.
- John A. Lynch Award in Analytical Chemistry: Given to an outstanding student in analytical chemistry courses.
- ACS Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry: Given to an outstanding student for academic performance in physical chemistry courses.
- ACS Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry: Given to an outstanding senior in chemistry or biochemistry with career plans in organic field. Includes membership in ACS Division of Organic Chemistry.
- Gamma Sigma Epsilon (Chemistry Honor Society): Given to all students who meet the hours and GPA criteria.
