- What is a Phlebotomy Technician?
Phlebotomy technicians are vital members of the clinical laboratory team. Their main function is to obtain patients’ blood specimens for testing purposes. Other common phlebotomy technician job duties include explaining procedures to patients, bandaging blood draw sites, monitoring patients and sterilizing tools.
- Who should enroll in this course?
Our Phlebotomy Tech program is made for any and all passionate individuals wanting to enter the healthcare field and make a lasting impact on their patients. Our fast-paced program requires dedication and attentiveness to be most successful.
Students who want or need patient care hours are especially encouraged to enroll!
To participate in the optional externship, students must be atleast 18 years old and willing to submit a background check, drug screening, and immunization records. The certification exam typically requires students to be atleast 18 years old and have at least a GED or high school diploma.
- Do I need any work experience or prerequisites?
Not at all! Our program is designed for all experience levels. The Certification Exam does require students to be atleast 18 years old and have at least a GED or high school diploma.
- What will I learn in this program?
- Process and procedures for collecting blood specimens for laboratory analysis
- All aspects of blood collection and related procedures (Per certification requirements, students are required to practice drawing blood on each other after practicing on a prosthetic.)

- Phlebotomy skills to perform venipunctures completely and safely

- What Phlebotomy Technician Certification does this program prepare me for?
Our program prepares students for the Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT) exam which is administered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). After passing the exam, the student becomes a nationally-recognized CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician).
The phlebotomy tech certification exam cost is included in the cost of the course.
- Do I have to renew my Certification?
Because of the rapid changes in the healthcare field, the NHA requires certification renewal every two years to maintain their CPT credentials.
- Where do Phlebotomy Techs typically work?
Phlebotomy technicians are employed throughout the healthcare system. Employment opportunities can be found in hospitals, medical group practices, public health facilities, veteran hospitals and insurance carriers.
- What is the Clinical Externship?
Students have the opportunity to participate in an optional clinical externship at a local healthcare facility. This hands-on experience allows students to work alongside healthcare professionals, interact with patients, and apply the skills learned in the classroom while gaining a deeper understanding of a phlebotomy technician's day-to-day responsibilities.
To be eligible for the externship, students must successfully complete the 80-hour program, pass a background check and drug screening, and provide current immunization records.

Justian Jarrett, CMA, CPT
Justian Jarrett graduated as Valedictorian with an Associate Degree in Medical Assisting in 2009. With more than 16 years of experience in healthcare, Justian has built a diverse career spanning pain management, oncology, clinical research, and cardiology.
For the past 14 years, Justian has been dedicated to educating and developing compassionate, skilled, and confident medical assistants and phlebotomy technicians. Today, Justian serves as a Lead Medical Assistant at a local cardiology practice while also teaching part-time in the Phlebotomy Technician program, helping students build the knowledge, confidence, and hands-on skills needed for success in the field.
