First Quantum Physics undergraduate degree in Tennessee!
UTC launched the first Bachelors of Science in Quantum Physics program in Tennessee Fall of 2024. Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) encompasses the use of fundamental principles of physics at the atomic and sub-atomic scales to build engineered systems that are advancing our capabilities in sensing and metrology, information processing and computing. Over the past four decades significant progress has been made towards realizing the promise of such engineered quantum systems. QISE has been a national priority in the US and internationally for almost a decade now.
UTC has an access node on campus to the first US commercial quantum network deployed by EPB, the city-owned electric utility and communications company, with Qubitekk Inc. It is a fiber optic network with quantum devices to generate, distribute, preserve, and measure photonic quantum states between nodes on the network, a proving ground for new quantum solutions.
Our program features hands-on training in quantum devices and quantum networking, as well as courses in quantum theory and quantum computing. Undergraduates have the opportunity to participate in original research and earn credit for internships in the quantum technology industry in the area.
UTC graduates will have a solid foundation in the basic physics and will be able to apply this knowledge in applications ranging from Quantum Sensing to development of Quantum Computing algorithms and applications.
Additional coursework leads to the Quantum Information Science and Technology Certificate.
