How have your studies in the program factored into your career goals? Any influential mentors on campus?
“At my last job, I developed a passion for computer-aided engineering technologies, but I didn’t have enough of the specific skills required to pursue this field at the technical level I desired. My education at UTC has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to pursue these new career goals. 18 months ago, job applications for my “dream job” in computational fluid mechanics were a hopeful stretch, at best. Now I bring a competitive set of skills into the job market, fully equipped to do what I love. My education at UTC has opened many doors for me and my family.
My most influential mentor on campus has been my advisor, Dr. Kidambi Sreenivas. Working under his leadership for my research, I learn from his expertise on a daily basis. I’ve learned to see my field of study the way he sees it – like a real expert.”
Why UTC?
“I came to UTC because it is well-equipped with the experienced faculty and physical resources necessary to seriously pursue computational engineering. The computational resources at the UTC Research Institute are truly first-class.”
Favorite thing to do in Chattanooga?
“My wife and I love to walk around the Bluff View Art District, especially with our favorite Clumpies ice cream! There are plenty of neat places to explore in the city.”
Have you changed during your time at UTC?
“My time at UTC has coincided with my first year of marriage – so in many ways, yes! Through that experience, my whole perspective on education has changed. The role of education in my life is, first and foremost, to set up the best future that I can for my wife and I. UTC has equipped me to do so well.”
Did you take any online courses?
“Yes, I had a couple online courses. It was great to gain all of the knowledge from the courses on my own schedule. Time management during seasons of education is inherently difficult, and the flexibility afforded by online coursework is a great help.”
What opportunities have you had to gain other skills?
“My experience at UTC has been under a Graduate Research Assistantship. I work part-time at the school doing research in my field of study. This has given me real-world experience, reinforcing many practical skills. And because I love what I do, the hands-on application of my education has assured me that this really is what I want to pursue in a career.”
Best part of going through the graduate program?
“The best part of my experience has been getting the opportunity to work directly under experts in my field of study through my research. There is seemingly no end to the bits of knowledge that I glean on a daily basis.”
Advice for any incoming graduate students?
“My advice for an incoming graduate student would be to “lean in”. Graduate school provides a unique season in life when you have access to more resources and expertise in your field than you will likely find any other time. So, lean into the coursework that equips you. Lean into time with your professors to learn from their knowledge. And lean into all that UTC offers to help pursue what you are passionate about.”
