Process

 

First Essay Attempt

  • Graded by TEP Essay Advisor

 

 

Pass

Once essay requirements under Checkpoint 1 are met, visit the TEP checkpoint page for further directions.
 

Fail

You will have the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills before you attempt the essay for the second time.
  • There is no required waiting period between failing the first essay and attempting the second essay. Please take as long as you need to study and practice the necessary skills that were identified in your first essay.

 

 

  • You are strongly encouraged to take your original writing to UTC’s Writing and Communication Center and work with support staff there to help you:

1) identify your error patterns, and

2) learn how to avoid these errors in your writing.

You may wish to schedule a tutoring session with the TEP Essay Advisor in the School of Education. This is not a requirement, but is highly recommended as one of your supports in preparing for your second essay attempt.

 

  • If you feel that your errors are so significant that you need more intensive remediation, you may wish to contact UTC’s English Department (203 Holt Hall, 425-4238) to identify a specific course that will address your composition needs.

 

Second Essay Attempt

 

  • Graded by TEP Essay Advisor

 

 

Pass

Fail

You will have the opportunity to improve your knowledge and skills before you attempt the essay for the third time.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE BE AWARE THAT IF YOU DO NOT PASS THE ESSAY ON THE THIRD ATTEMPT, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO MOVE FORWARD TO TEACHER LICENSURE.
  • There is no required waiting period between failing the second essay and attempting the third essay. Please take as long as you need to study and practice the necessary skills that were identified in your first and second essays. Please be aware that you have followed the requirements listed below before requesting your third prompt.
  • You are strongly encouraged to take your original writing to UTC’s Writing and Communication Center and work with support staff there to help you

1) identify your error patterns, and
2) learn how to avoid these errors in your writing.

  • You will be required to schedule one or more tutoring sessions with the TEP Essay Advisor in the School of Education. The TEP Essay Advisor and you will meet to discuss and correct the identified errors on your previously written essays.
    • You will present evidence of your efforts to address identified deficits in the first and second writings to the TEP Essay Advisor. (TEP Resource Page)
    • You will write an essay to be evaluated by the TEP Essay Advisor at another scheduled appointment. 
    • You will complete remediation and write the third essay ONLY after you have presented an acceptable essay to the TEP Essay Advisor.
  • You are strongly encouraged to take your original writing to UTC’s Writing and Communication Center and work with support staff there to help you

2) learn how to avoid these errors in your writing.

 

Third Essay Attempt

 

  • Graded by two SOE faculty members

 

 

Pass

Once essay requirements under Checkpoint 1 are met, visit the TEP checkpoint page for further directions.
 

Fail

You have not been successful in exhibiting the knowledge and skills in written composition necessary for a classroom teacher. You will not be allowed to move forward toward teacher licensure in UTC’s School of Education; however, our staff and/or faculty will support you in identifying another major for the completion of a four-year degree.
