First Generation Student Programming
At UTC, a first generation college student is someone whose parent(s) did not receive a bachelor’s degree. We have intentionally created three programs which specialize in making sure first generation students are successful.
UTC takes pride in serving this special population of students and has been recognized as a First Gen Forward Institution by the Center of First Generation Student Success.
First Gen Mocs
A living learning community designed exclusively for students who are the first in their family to go to college.
- Students live together in the same residence hall.
- Students take the same section of USTU 1250, taught by a faculty member who was also the first in their family to go to college.
- Students receive a First Gen Mentor.
First Gen Mentor Program
This program pairs students who are the first in their family to go to college with a mentor who is a faculty or staff member who was also the first in the family to graduate college.
First Generation Student Awareness Day
This special day recognizing students who are the first in their family to go to college is celebrated nationally on November 8.
