Social Work Student Outcomes

Masters in Social Work (MSW) Program

Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes

Last Completed on June 23, 2020

All Council on Social Work Education programs measure and report student learning outcomes. Students are assessed on their mastery of the competencies that comprise the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education. These competencies are dimensions of social work practice that all social workers are expected to master during their professional training. A measurement benchmark is set by the social work programs for each competency. An assessment score at or above that benchmark is considered by the program to represent mastery of that particular competency.

The Masters in Social Work (MSW) program at UTC has a benchmark for the generalist curriculum and a benchmark for the specialized/advanced curriculum. The generalist benchmark is 90% of students will score a minimum of 3 out of 5 points for each of the competencies. Specialist students benchmark is 80% of students will achieve a four or five on a five-point Likert scale for each of the competencies. For the coursework, assessment scores represent the aggregate mean of student outcomes for each competency. For the field experience, the assessment scores represent the aggregate mean of student outcomes for each competency and behavior. Educational assessment tools used to evaluate student outcomes during the 2019 – 2020 MSW Program include embedded assignments for each course and the Learning Agreement for for field work. Findings are from students enrolled in the program during the 2019 – 2020 academic year.
