- Notice seeking proposals to develop the core system science needed to engineer complex cyber-physical systems upon which people can depend with high confidence. The program aims to foster a research community committed to advancing research and education in CPS and to transitioning CPS science and technology into engineering practice.
- Deadlines: Proposals are due March 15, 2012, January 22, 2013 and January 22, 2014. Approximately $31.5 million is available to support 20 to 30 awards. Colleges and universities are eligible to apply.

Endangered Language Fund (1/24/12)
Proposals for Language Maintenance and Linguistic Field Work Worldwide
- Funding is available for researchers and activists working to preserve endangered
languages. The Endangered Language Fund’s Language Legacies program provides grants averaging $2,000 each for language maintenance and linguistic
field work focused on languages that are in danger of disappearing within a generation
Proposals, which are due by April 20, 2012, should identify the target language’s location on the “endangerment continuum” and should address how the work will serve both the native community and the field of linguistics. Consultant fees, tapes, films, and travel are all eligible expenses; indirect costs are not.

Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS)
- The Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service (SFS) program seeks to increase
the number of qualified students entering the fields of information assurance and
cybersecurity and to increase the capacity of the United States higher education enterprise
to continue to produce professionals in these fields to meet the needs of our increasingly
technological society. The SFS program is composed of two tracks:
- The Scholarship Track provides funding to colleges and universities to award scholarships to students in the information assurance and cybersecurity fields. Scholarship recipients shall pursue academic programs in information assurance for the final two years of their bachelor's- or master's-level program; final three years of study where the student is receiving both the bachelor's and the master's degree; final three years in combined bachelor's and master's degree ("five year") programs; or for the final three years of research-based doctoral-level study. During the scholarship period, the students will participate in meaningful summer internships but doctoral students may be allowed to replace their summer internship with a research activity. In return for their scholarships, recipients will work after graduation for a Federal, State, Local, or Tribal Government organization in a position related to cybersecurity for a period equal to the length of the scholarship. A limited number of students may be placed in National Laboratories and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs).
- The Capacity Building Track provides funds to colleges and universities to improve the quality and increase the production of high-quality information assurance and cybersecurity professionals by providing support for efforts within the higher education system, as well as outreach to K-12 students with related interests. Professional development of faculty expertise in information assurance, cybersecurity or digital forensics can be funded under this track, as well as projects to increase interest in information assurance and accelerate the integration of information assurance, computer security or cybersecurity knowledge across the STEM disciplines; development, deployment, and evaluation of information assurance, cybersecurity and/or digital forensics curriculum guidelines leading to wide adoption nationally; evaluation of the effectiveness of cybersecurity competitions, games, and other outreach and retention activities; and other innovative and creative projects which lead to an increase in the ability of the United States higher education enterprise to produce information assurance and cybersecurity professionals.

Research Grants for Preventing Violence and Violence Related Injury
- Notice seeking applications to build the scientific base for the prevention of violence by helping to expand and advance our understanding of the primary prevention of interpersonal and self-directed violence.
- Deadlines: Letter of intent is due February 16, 2012, although not required. Applications are due March 16, 2012. Approximately $1.6 million is available to support up to four applications. Colleges and universities are eligible to apply.

TN-SCORE Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) for Faculty
- The TN-SCORE program is now soliciting applications for the Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) for Faculty. Although no specific application deadline is mentioned, the research would be conducted during the summer of 2012. The TN-SCORE program is a National Science Foundation Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR) Track 1 infrastructure grant that seeks innovation of alternative energy solutions to positively impact the state’s educational foundations, economy and workforce development. The current focus areas include:
- Thrust 1 Advanced Solar Conversion and Innovation,
- Thrust 2 Components and Devices for Energy Storage and Conversion and
- Thrust 3 Nanostructures for Enhancing Energy Efficiency.
- Research Opportunity Awards for Faculty Objectives:
Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) for faculty is designed for faculty at 2-year and 4-year institutions to establish long-term collaboration with a researcher in one of the TN-SCORE thrust areas. The information, techniques and experience gained can be spread to the faculty award winner’s campus, students and colleagues. All universities involved in the EPSCOR thrust areas are eligible to host faculty under this program. The summer experience may involve research at the scientific level, or focus on developing educational outreach programs. Funding provided by NSF EPS-10004083.
Tenure track faculty members at any two or four year college or university in Tennessee are eligible to apply. Proposals submitted must be in the area of alternative energy and directly related to the program of one of the TN-SCORE thrust areas.
- Funding Awards:
The faculty winners will be provided with a summer stipend of $12,500 as well as a $7,500 startup grant for use at their home institution to help translate the experience to the home institution. A travel subsidy will be provided to attend the TN-SCORE annual conference. Three faculty partnerships will be awarded statewide.
