Common Rule Revisions

On January 19, 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and 15 other Federal Agencies released a final revision of the Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects, or “Common Rule.” These are the first revisions to the Common Rule since it was promulgated in 1991.  The goal of these revisions is to reduce administrative burden and better protect subjects in the modern research context.

On April 19, 2018, HHS released an NPRM proposing to delay the general compliance date for the revised Common Rule until January 21, 2019.

The UTC IRB is currently developing guidelines and procedures on how to best adhere to the new Federal Guidelines. Stay tuned for announcements and training materials/workshops on how these changes will affect the IRB approval process.
