Volunteer Opportunities

RESEARCH Dialogues is not possible without the support and help of the UTC and Chattanooga community. We are currently looking for the below volunteers. If you are interested and would like more information, please email Meredith Perry, meredith-perry@utc.edu or orsp@utc.edu. Thank you for your help!

Become a Judge

As part of the RESEARCH Dialogues event, there are 3 pitch-style competitions where students and faculty showcase their ability to present scholarly content to a diverse audience. Please click here for more information on the different competitions. We are seeking 10-15 judges for each pitch competition.  Judges are asked to score each presenter using a rubric to determine the competition winners.  We are seeking judges who can be available at least 15 minutes prior to the competition start time and available throughout the scheduled competition. The undergraduate lightning round competition is Tuesday, April 3rd from 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM. The graduate 3MT© is Wednesday, April 4th from 9:15 AM - 10:45 AM, and the faculty elevator pitch competition is from  A full schedule of events can be found here.

Become a Faculty Moderator

To help keep the podium, panel, and performance presentations on schedule we need 30-40 faculty moderators to introduce the presentations, keep track of timing, and help transition to the next presentation. On Tuesday, April 3rd podium and panel presentations are from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM, and performance presentations are from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM. On Wednesday, April 4th podium and panel presentations are from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM, and performance presentations are from 12:00 PM - 2:30 PM. We are seeking volunteer moderators who can fill at least one-hour time blocks. For a full schedule of events, please click here. Below are more details on a moderator's tasks.

  • Each presenter has only 15 minutes for their presentation including any Q&A time afterwards.
  • You have been provided with a red card and a yellow card; hold the yellow card up at minute 13 (letting the presenter know they have 2 minutes left), then the red card at minute 15 so they know to conclude their presentation.
  • When the presenter is finished (or keeps going too long), stand and thank the presenter to move things along
  • Introduce the next presenter (name and title of presentation).
  • We will email the presenters to let them know that the yellow card means they have 2 minutes left and the red card means time is up.
  • We will provide a moderator packet which will include a thumb drive for the presentations we have received for your assigned grouping, a remote control for the presentation, the yellow & red timing cards and any other materials needed.  You should plan to use a watch or cell phone to keep up with the time.
