To register for any of the below events, please register by filling out the RESEARCH Dialogues application

Podium & Panel Presentations

Presenters are invited to make oral or visual presentations related to research, scholarship, or creative activity.  Podium presentation sessions will be moderated. Groups of presenters are also invited to organize a panel discussion or group presentation.

  • Undergraduate students will be scheduled between 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM  and 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM on Tuesday, April 3, so please indicate your FULL availability in the application.

  • We will use the information from the application form to develop event materials, so please list all names as you would like them to appear on the website and in printed materials (i.e. include credentials such as "John Smith, PhD" where applicable).

  • Podium presentations can include performances such as speeches, scholarly talks, or robotic demonstrations, but must be limited to 15 minutes including time for questions. Time limits will be strictly enforced to ensure that all presenters have equitable time.

  • Individuals using PowerPoint (or other presentation software) should email their FINAL presentation to orsp@utc.edu 2 days prior to the event to have the presentations loaded and ready on the day of the event.

  • Presenters should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their presentation. Please do not enter a room while another student is presenting. Please wait until the student has made his/her final comments or the Q&A session has begun. Doing so enables you to be respectful of your fellow presenters.

Poster & Display Presentations

Undergraduate students are invited to present posters or tabletop displays related to research, scholarship, or creative activity.  Posters and displays can come in many shapes and sizes!  If your presentation doesn’t work with a traditional poster format, that is no problem.  Models, photos, laptop computers, interactive materials, listening stations, robots – all are welcome and can be accommodated.  Just make a note of your needs on the application or contact orsp@utc.edu for special arrangements.

  • Undergraduate students will be scheduled between 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM  and 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM on Tuesday, April 3, so please indicate your FULL availability in the application.

  • We will use the information from the application to develop event materials, so please list all names as you would like them to appear on the website and in printed materials (i.e. include credentials such as "John Smith, PhD" where applicable).

  • Students requesting to present MUST include the name of their faculty advisor.

  • There are two options for poster size: 3 x 4 or 4 x 7 feet. Please ensure that your poster fits within one of these dimensions.

  • Unless you are presenting original artwork, all posters should be printed on paper and able to be mounted to the provided foam boards. Please note you are responsible for printing your own poster.

  • Undergraduate Poster set-up is from 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM and from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM on April 3, 2018.

  • If you have any questions, please email orsp@utc.edu

Performance Presentations

For individuals or groups of faculty, staff, and students who want to showcase their creative talents through a musical or dramatic performance to a larger audience, they should participate in performance presentations in the UC Auditorium.

Lightning Round Pitch Competition

Communicating the value of scholarship, engagement, the arts, research, creative endeavors, and the humanities is an essential skill for students involved or interested in these areas. The Undergraduate Lightning round competition seeks to celebrate and promote undergraduate students who want to share their ideas for research or creative endeavor by creating an opportunity for students to make a pitch for funding and prizes. Students will have 2 minutes and can use up to 2 slides to make a pitch for funding for their research, scholarship, outreach, or creative activity.  See the competition guidelines for details.  There are up to 22 available slots for presenters and all presenters must be available during the allotted competition time:  3:00 PM - 4:30 PM on April 3.  A panel of 5-7 community judges will select 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.  1st prize winner gets a $100 gift card and a Student SEARCH Grant (for continuing UTC students), 2nd prize winner receives a $75 gift card,  and 3rd prize will receive a $50 gift card.

To see last year's videos of the lightning round pitch competition, please go to the RESEARCH Dialogues Archives page.

Competition Guidelines

  • Presentations are limited to 2 minutes in duration and will be timed.

  • Presentations are limited to 2 total slides (including introductory / title slide).

  • Presentations should be appropriate for a well-educated general audience most of whom will not be experts in your particular area of scholarship or creative expression.

A Few Notes for Presenters:

Please note that the schedule is tight and the two-minute limit is firm. You will be given a one-minute visual warning. Moderators will be asked to cut you off if your time limit is exceeded. Presenters are asked to ensure that their slides are uploaded 30 minutes prior to their presentation and to check in with the moderator when they arrive.
