The International Summer Research Experience in Spain represents a collaboration between the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and the University of Cadiz in Spain. The purpose of this program is to support students to participate in a nine  week intensive, creative research experience during the summer in a global environment. Undergraduates and graduates from all disciplines are eligible to apply. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018



Full-time undergraduate and graduate students may apply. Students in all disciplines may apply. Students may only submit one application per cycle. 

Award and Duration

The summer research experience in Spain is expected to lasts for nine weeks onsite with a brief orientation session at UTC. Final reports must be submitted by August 31, 2019. Awards will include the following:

*student stipend (paid as student compensation with fringe benefits and payroll taxes deducted).

*  Funds to defray the cost of airfare.

*Housing and transfers

*Funds to defray costs associated with research activity-e.g., supplies, printing, etc. 

Proposal Review and Selection

All proposals will be reviewed by a selection panel composed of UTC and University of Cadiz faculty and administrators. Each proposal will be evaluated using a standardized rubric. Proposal selection will consider not only the quality of the individual proposal but also the alignment with prospective research mentors from the University of Cadiz and diversity of disciplines represented. Applicants will be notified of the outcome via e-mail in February 2019.  

Award Requirements

*Submit a final project report by August 31, 2019 

*Meet all deadlines related to and participate in the UTC Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium in August 2019.

*Meet all deadlines related to and participate in the Southern Conference Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF) in November 2019.

*Present at the 2020 Research Dialogues conference 

*Submit a summer international experience testimonial

1) Signed Application Cover Sheet (scanned signatures are acceptable)

2) Two Letters of Recommendation

3) Unofficial transcripts

4) Letter of Application  

 The Letter of Application should answer the following questions:

*What are your long-term research goals and interests?

*How is the research and international experience aligned with your learning and career goals?

*Why is an international experience important or impactful for your research and learning?

What are your future career goals and how will this experience support these goals?

How to Submit Application

Submit all required application materials via e-mail to  by 11:45pm on Sunday, November 18, 2018.

Submission is considered complete only when you receive an e-mail confirmation acknowledging receipt of the application.

National Conferences 


National Conference for Undergraduate Research (NCUR) 2020

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) is the largest UR conference in the country. Each year, approximately 4,000 undergraduates present their research, gain professional development skills, and network with other undergraduate researchers. 

The 2020 NCUR Conference will be held March 26-28 at at Montana State University.

Tennessee Experiential Learning Symposium

The 2018 Tennessee Experiential Learning Symposium (TELS) will feature students from across Tennessee who have participated in high-impact practices including study abroad, internships, service-learning, undergraduate research and a host of other faculty-mentored experiential activities.

The fourth annual SoCon Undergraduate Research Forum (SURF) will showcase more than 150 UR projects.

World Congress on UR

2nd World Congress on Undergraduate Research: The congress offers an opportunity for global dialogue across many different fields of inquiry. Students across the world are invited to share their research, develop new professional networks, and create international research partnerships.
