UTC Graduation Frequently Asked Questions

Updated Information on December 2020 Commencement:

In light of ongoing public health concerns regarding large gatherings, the Fall Commencement exercises
will be held virtually on December 12, 2020.

We know this decision is disappointing to you. We are also disappointed. The decision was a difficult one, but we are confident it is in the best interest of the campus community.

More details on the virtual ceremony will be provided in the coming weeks. While we are saddened to not be able to celebrate in person in December, we hope you will join us for the virtual ceremony. When it is safe for us to resume in person ceremonies, you will be invited back to campus to participate with us.

Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the fall (in December) semester and the spring (in May) semesters.  Specific dates can be located on the online Academic Calendar

Degrees are awarded at the end of the fall (December), spring (May), and summer (August) semesters.

Students must apply for Graduation to be considered a candidate for a degree. Graduation ceremonies are normally only held in December and May.

While we are offering Virtual Graduation Ceremonies, requests to participate in a graduation ceremony other than one you are a candidate for, will not be accepted. We will restore this form and request when in-person ceremonies are able to safely take place again.

There is no rehearsal prior to the commencement exercise. You will receive instructions from a faculty marshal on the day of commencement. Please be sure to arrive at McKenzie Arena 45 minutes prior to start time.

Closer to the commencement ceremony, you will be notified by UTC email of opportunities to verify the pronunciation of your name. If you have any concerns about the accurate pronunciation of your name, it is important that you participate in one of those opportunities. If you aren't able to participate, you'll be given other instructions in the announcement email.

Undergraduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 2 hours.
Graduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 1 and 1/2 hours.

UTC graduation candidates wear navy blue caps and gowns.

Invitations can also be purchased through the Bookstore online ordering process.

Names of all August graduates will be published in the December Commencement program. The May Commencement program will list all August candidates who have applied by March 30th.

Honors designations at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are based upon a student's entire academic career and are not finalized until grades for the final semester are posted to the student's record. Grades are not finalized until after the Commencement ceremony. Undergraduate students who are eligible to be identified as a "Latin Honors Candidate" will receive a white tassel at the commencement ceremony. Graduate students do not graduate with honors since a minimum 3.0 grade point average it required to graduate.
