Message from President Boyd to Fall 2020 Graduates

A decision regarding May 2021 commencement ceremonies will be announced later in the semester as the current Covid-19 situation is assessed by the institution. Normally, Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the fall (in December) semester and the spring (in May) semesters.  Specific dates can be located on the online Academic Calendar

Degrees are awarded at the end of the fall (December), spring (May), and summer (August) semesters.

Students must apply for Graduation to be considered a candidate for a degree. Graduation ceremonies are normally only held in December and May.

There is no rehearsal prior to the commencement exercise. You will receive instructions from a faculty marshal on the day of commencement. Please be sure to arrive on campus 45 minutes prior to start time.

Closer to the commencement ceremony, you will be notified by UTC email of opportunities to verify the pronunciation of your name. If you have any concerns about the accurate pronunciation of your name, it is important that you participate in one of those opportunities. If you aren't able to participate, you'll be given other instructions in the announcement email.

Commencement ceremonies are expected to last about 1 hour.

UTC graduation candidates are invited to wear navy blue caps and gowns.

Caps and gowns can be purchased through the UTC Bookstore online ordering process. The bookstore is located in the University Center and you can call
423-425-4107 if you have questions. You'll select your shipment preference to start. In addition to your height, weight, and hat size, you will also need to know the academic degree you are to receive.

Invitations can also be purchased through the Bookstore online ordering process.

Ceremony attendees will receive an order of ceremony page. Full programs will be mailed to December graduates after final grades are processed in December.  Graduates from May and August 2020 received programs in August 2020.

Diplomas will be delivered to graduates at the address listed on their graduation application a few weeks after graduation. If this address changes after the application is submitted, please notify theOffice of the University Registrar at utcgraduation@utc.edu. Diplomas for students with holds on their account will be stored in the Office of the University Registrar until the hold is cleared (see After Graduation for more information on holds).

The UTC diploma measures 14" x 17".

Please see After Graduation for more information on diplomas.

Honors designations at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are based upon a student's entire academic career and are not finalized until grades for the final semester are posted to the student's record. Grades are not finalized until after the Commencement ceremony. Undergraduate students who are eligible to be identified as a "Latin Honors Candidate" will receive a white tassel at the commencement ceremony. Graduate students do not graduate with honors since a minimum 3.0 grade point average it required to graduate.

For undergraduate Latin honors eligibility please see After You've Applied.

Graduates wear the academic regalia which can be purchased through the UTC bookstore.

Graduates should wear lightweight, comfortable clothing underneath the gown.  Examples include an appropriate day dress or slacks, dress trousers in a dark color, a dress shirt with tie, comfortable dark shoes and dark socks. Graduates should not carry a purse or handbag.

The cap should be worn so that the mortarboard is level/flat on the head. It should not be slanted to the back or side of the head. The crown should be approximately one inch above the eyebrow.
