UTC Graduation Frequently Asked Questions
Tickets are not required to attend a graduation ceremony at UTC. Graduation ceremonies are held in UTC's McKenzie Arena. All guest seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Graduation ceremonies are held at the end of the fall (in December) semester and the spring (in May) semesters. Specific dates can be located on the online Academic Calendar.
Degrees are awarded at the end of the fall (December), spring (May), and summer (August) semesters.
Students must apply for Graduation to be considered a candidate for a degree. Graduation ceremonies are only held in December and May.
There is no rehearsal prior to the commencement exercise. You will receive instructions from your faculty marsal on the day of commencement. Please be sure to arrive at McKenzie Arena 45 minutes prior to start time.
Closer to the commencement ceremony, you will be notified by UTC email when you can meet with commencement officials to verify the pronunciation of your name. If you have any concerns about the accurate pronunciation of your name, it is important that you stop by the Records Office during that time. If you aren't able to attend this time, you'll be given other instructions in announcement email.
Undergraduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 2 hours.
Graduate commencement ceremonies typically last approximately 1 and 1/2 hours.
UTC graduation candidates wear navy blue caps and gowns.
Caps and gowns can be purchased through the UTC Bookstore online ordering process. The bookstore is located in the University Center and you can call 423-425-4107 if you have questions. You'll select your shipment preference to start. In addition to your height, weight, and hat size, you will also need to know the academic degree you are to receive.
Invitations can also be purchased through the Bookstore online ordering process.
Names of all August graduates will be published in the December Commencement program. The May Commencement program will list all August candidates who have applied by March 30th.
Diplomas will be delivered to the Records Office approximately 8 weeks after graduation. Graduates will be sent an email to their UTC account when they have arrived and students will have 2 weeks to come by the Records Office to pick up their diploma. Students must bring a photo ID with them and have no holds on their account (see After Graduation for more information on holds).
After 2 weeks all remaining diplomas will be mailed out to the address listed on their graduation application. If this address changes after the application is submitted, please notify the Records Office at firstname.lastname@example.org. The UTC diploma measures 14" x 17".
Honors designations at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are based upon a student's entire academic career and are not finalized until grades for the final semester are posted to the student's record. Grades are not finalized until after the Commencement ceremony. Undergraduate students who are eligible to be identified as a "Latin Honors Candidate" will receive a white tassel (from their faculty marshal) at commencement. Graduate students do not graduate with honors since a minimum 3.0 grade point average it required to graduate.

Students should wear lightweight, comfortable clothing underneath the gown. Male graduate are advised to wear dress trousers in a dark color, a dress shirt with tie, dark shoes and dark socks. Female graduates are advised to wear an appropriate day dress or slacks, and comfortable dark shoes and should not carry a purse or handbag.
The cap should be worn so that the mortarboard is level/flat on the head. It should not be slanted to the back or side of the head. The crown should be approximately one inch above the eyebrow.

A professional photographer will take your picture before you cross the stage and take your picture with the Chancellor. You will be mailed a proof of the photograph at no expense to you. Please make sure your address is up to date and correct in your MyMocsNet account.
Yes, there will be a sign language interpreter at the ceremony.
