Not all institutions accept CLEP/DSST credit, so please check with your institution before registering for an exam.


College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

College credit by exam.

General Information: 

CLEP is a 90 minute computer-based exam.  On test day, a total of two hours will be required for the exam administration and registration process.  Each CLEP exam is $87 (new price is $89 effective July 1, 2019), payable via credit card at the time you register for your test on the CLEP website.  A $25 non-refundable registration fee must also be paid to the UTC Testing Center before taking any CLEP exam.

Test Dates:

CLEP exams will be administered by appointment only at UTC in Hooper Hall Room 205.  Click here for a map of campus.

Registration and Fee Payment Instructions:

  1. Create your account with CLEP using the following link: account signup.
  2. Once you have created your account and paid the $87 testing fee, please complete the UTC CLEP registration and fee payment here.  You must have a voucher number from CLEP in order to schedule your test.  Once you complete the registration and payment, we will contact you via email to schedule your CLEP exam.  Be sure to bring a photo ID with you on test day.  Please note, if you need to reschedule for any reason, including arriving too late for your scheduled test or arriving without ID or test fee, you must pay a $25 rescheduling fee.

Special Note:

If you have taken at least one CLEP exam at UTC in the past, please email the UTC Testing Center for registration instructions.

Test Results:

At the completion of the test, you will receive a copy of your exam results (unless you are taking an essay exam).  An official score will be mailed to the institution that you designated within 10 days of the test administration.

DSST (formerly DANTES Subject Standardized Test)

Receive credit for life experiences.

General Information:

DSST is a two-hour computer-based exam that allows college credit to be received for learning acquired outside the classroom from reading, on-the-job training, or independent study.  

On test day, a total of two hours will be required for exam administration and registration process.  Each DSST exam is $80, payable on test day to DSST via credit or debit card.  A $25 non-refundable registration fee payable to UTC is required prior to scheduling a DSST exam.

How to Register:

  1. Complete the registration form and indicate which DSST test you will be taking and submit the $25 proctoring fee here.  
  2.   3. You must have the following items with you on the day of the test:

  • Picture identification
