CRNAs in 3D


Nationwide, the nursing workforce is overwhelmingly white, with only 24.6% comprised of racial/ethnic minorities—and among Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), only 9% are minorities. Numerous studies have shown that patients are more likely to receive high quality preventive care and treatment when they and their providers share race, ethnicity, language and/or religion. UTC proposes a pathway for those from minority or disadvantaged backgrounds to earn the CRNA credential, one of the most lucrative and sought-after achievements in nursing. The CRNAs in 3D: Increasing Diversity, Reducing Disparities, and Understanding the Social Determinants of Health program offers a unique but much needed approach to increase diversity and cultural competency in the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) population.


The goals of this project:

  1. Increase the diversity of the CRNA profession through individual-level strategies and interventions;

  2. Increase Nurse Anesthesia program graduates’ awareness of and preparation for addressing health disparities and incorporating knowledge of the social determinants of health into clinical practice through social-level strategies such as including more clinical experiences in diverse settings to increase cultural competence and awareness;

  3. Enhance UTC’s Nurse Anesthesia program to increase the skills, experiences, and clinical preparation of students to alleviate health disparities and incorporate the social determinants of health into clinical practice through changes in program curriculum.
