Childhood and Adult obesity remains one of the most significant health concerns for many Americans.   A study conducted by the National Health and Nutrition Examination survey found that more than one-third (35%) of adults in America are obese while nearly 17% of American children and adolescents are obese.  As obesity rates in the United States continue to grow, it has become essential for the development of high-quality and well-prepared healthcare professionals.

COMPASS – Combating Obesity’s Multiple chronic conditions through Preparation Activities Shared among Students

The COMPASS program will advance nursing education and practice by engaging Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) students, along with graduate health science students, in shared, complex clinical learning opportunities by utilizing technology, simulation, and standardized patients to support meaningful interprofessional learning. 

The purpose of the project is to enhance advanced nursing education to prepare FNP students for safe and effective delivery of primary, acute, and emergent care and effectively working within interprofessional teams of health and other care providers to maximize patient safety and quality care. 

The COMPASS program will have regional impact by building on UTC’s established partnerships, institutions of higher education and clinical sites region-wide.

The project is aligned to:

  1. Enhance complex learning in nursing education and practice in advanced practice nursing and interprofessional programs in the region; and
  2. Enhance the FNP workforce to implement best practices for care across a lifespan care and promote patient safety by working in interprofessional teams within diverse health care settings serving individuals who are experiencing chronic obesity. 

COMPASS Coalition for interprofessional Learning will use a technology enhanced learning environment and virtual learning as well as community-based Interprofessional experiential learning opportunities.
