What is Exercise and Health Science?
Exercise and Health Science is the study of movement and the associated biological responses and adaptations, and the study of applied science relating to human physical and behavioral wellbeing. Students in Exercise and Health Sciences (EHS) program at UTC will learn about the scientific approach of the discipline and the links between fitness, exercise, and health. Ultimately, a degree in EHS will equip students to help others lead healthier lives.
Why choose the EHS program at UTC?
The EHS program is designed to both teach students the knowledge they will need in this area of study, and to help them develop the critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities needed in the field. To this end, students will be taught how to apply the knowledge they have learned to practical situations in the field. In addition to participating in engaging face-to-face or online courses, students will have the opportunity to complete internships, participate in faculty-led research, receive one-on-one faculty mentoring, and participate in experiential service-learning.
There are many different career paths a student can choose with a background in EHS, and here at UTC, the EHS faculty are committed to helping students find the right career path that is the best fit for them. To this end, the EHS program offers two different tracks that are described below. The most popular career paths students pursue are included below under their affiliated track. If you have another health-related career path in mind, let us know. The EHS major can be tailored to fit the prerequisite requirements of almost any health or medical field that you wish to pursue. Upon completing the EHS program, students should be well-equipped for success in their career or for further study in a related graduate school program.
EHS Pre-Health Professional Track
The EHS pre-health professional track prepares students for graduate work in areas of study such as Athletic Training, Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Physician Assistants. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 to remain on this track. Pre-requisite classes for graduate school are built into the EHS Pre-Health Professional program of study so upon graduating, students are equipped to apply to their graduate program of interest, while also having gained extensive knowledge in exercise and health sciences.

EHS Applied Professional Track
The EHS Applied Professional track is designed to prepare students to practice in the field after graduation, or to prepare students for graduate work in applied health settings such as public health or exercise physiology. Students completing this degree might seek employment in private, corporate, hospital or governmental fitness or wellness programs and facilities. Graduates might also pursue careers in strength and conditioning or with other organizations promoting health such as Health Departments and organizations such as the American Heart Association. It will also prepare students for various professional credentials such as the Certified Health Education Specialist offered by National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, the American College of Sports Medicine Certified Exercise Physiologist, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Whether a student is interested in public health, strength and conditioning, clinical exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, or other applied health areas, the EHS applied track is designed to prepare students with the foundation, skillset, and experience they will need to be on their way to achieving their career goals. Students must maintain a 2.5 to remain on this track.
