The UTC Concerto Competition will be held at 5:00 PM in Cadek Hall on Thursday, October 10, 2019, and the performance will be Sunday, February 9 at 3 PM in the C.C. Bond Humanities Theatre at Chattanooga State. UTC undergraduate and graduate instrumental and vocal students enrolled in UTC applied music study are eligible to compete, and the application must have the applied instructor’s signature. Students may win the chance to perform with the orchestra twice as concerto winners; once as solo entrants and once as a member of a duo, trio, or quartet.
Audition requirements are as follows: Solo concerto--the selection shall be one movement of a solo concerto or a single-movement work with soloist not to exceed 13 minutes. The selection shall be memorized for the audition, and the winners will perform from memory. For the audition, selections must be performed with piano accompaniment. Duo, trio, or quartet concerto—same as above except that the selection will not be memorized nor performed from memory.
Winners will be selected based on the performance of the audition piece. Some consideration may be given to diversity of performance media, depending on the number and quality of audition performances. Number of winners selected will be determined by the number of highly-qualified contestants and length of pieces. The accompaniments must be readily available for purchase or rental and playable by the orchestra given the amount of available rehearsal time. It is strongly recommended that teachers submit the names of the contestants’ selections to the orchestra conductor as soon as possible so that she may approve the works for performance with the orchestra.
Application deadline: Monday, September 16, 2019
