GUIDE Mentorship Program

The Multicultural Affairs Mentorship program began in the fall of 2011 and has demonstrated successful outcomes for participants beyond the last decade.

The GUIDE Program exists to encourage first year student involvement on campus and in the greater community through personal goal setting, leadership training, professional development, and mental and physical awareness. The guides (mentors and multicultural ambassadors) create opportunities for participants to improve self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership abilities while serving as part of a close knit, and dynamic group.

GUIDE participants are first year UTC students who come from various backgrounds, seeking opportunities to engage and find support in the campus community.

Multicultural Ambassadors and Mentors range in classification from sophomores to seniors who go through a rigorous application process where factors such as GPA, conduct, leadership and interpersonal skills are taken into consideration.

Ambassadors and Mentors serve to support the Office of Multicultural Affairs in varying capacities including but not limited to:

Peer coaches (mentors) to GUIDE participants
Multicultural programming assistants
Multicultural Center evening staff
Represent the Office of Multicultural Affairs on panels and at various events

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

To establish meaningful mentorship relationships between incoming first-year students and upper classmen at UTC.
To facilitate experiential learning and growth opportunities through active engagement and knowledge sharing about student life.
To train and develop student leaders for active service on campus and throughout the wider community.
To create a solid support network to promote personal, social, and academic advancement.

The program ensures that ambassadors, mentors, and participants maintain regular contact and communication with one another.

Weekly GUIDE Sessions

The program includes an intensive experiential learning component allowing participants to receive ThinkAchieve recognition

Programming Curriculum Guide

GUIDE follows an engaging multicultural programming curriculum designed so participants have experiences and interactions with campus and community leaders from many backgrounds, disciplines, and career fields. There are also off-campus volunteer activities and throughout the year, to connect and explore local offerings.

See mentor criteria listed below:

Have at least a 2.5 GPA at the end of the previous spring semester
Completed FERPA Form
Reference Check
Be in good standing with the University
Be able to work at least 5 hours a week (Weekly meetings, mentee check-ins, office hours)
Participate in professional development activities every week, excluding university closing and breaks.
Participate in GUIDE Retreat, required Wednesday weekly meetings with the participants, and maintain weekly contact with their mentees.
Complete mandatory student training

Available to work at least 10 hours per week
Available to work MCC after dark hours between 5pm-10pm Monday- Thursday
Complete mandatory student training

Homecoming Day of Service
Other events put on by the Office of Multicultural Affairs as needed.
