Online Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management

The Master of Public Administration program at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga offers the online Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management.

The mission of the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management program is to equip nonprofit managers and leaders, and those who aspire to such positions, with knowledge and skills for the efficient, effective, and ethical management of nonprofit organizations.

The faculty represent diverse areas of expertise from academic training and experience as practicing public administrators, nonprofit executives, and consultants. All courses are offered entirely online by faculty trained in online delivery and dedicated to maintaining a high quality educational experience for students.

The certificate program's curriculum links theory to practice, preparing students with both concrete skills and the ability to think conceptually, strategically, and critically about their work as nonprofit managers.

To earn the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management, students complete six online courses covering essential topics in nonprofit management:

5430 Nonprofit Management - Immersion of the student in nonprofit administration. The theoretical and the practical side of nonprofit management from establishment of a nonprofit organization through the operations of programs.

5340 Executive Process in Public and Nonprofit Agencies - Prepares students for leadership positions within public and nonprofit organizations. Students will be exposed to a variety of theories and issues that emphasize the complexity of leading public and nonprofit agencies.

5350 Community Building - The role of public and nonprofit agencies in the development of community resources.

5360 Government and Nonprofits - An examination of the relationship between government and the nonprofit sector in the definition, funding, and delivery of public services.

5370 Nonprofit Development - The basic concepts and skills to develop community resources for the support of a non-profit agency. Obtaining and managing grants, fundraising, donor development, and managing the resource activities of an agency are covered. Budgeting and legal aspects that pertain directly to resource development are included.

5380 Nonprofit Marketing - The organizational issue of marketing agencies and programs. Principles of marketing, market research techniques and applications and the role of marketing in strategic planning for non-profit agencies.

5390 Strategic Planning in Nonprofit Organizations - Focuses on the skills necessary for conducting a strategic planning process in nonprofit agencies.


Students may qualify for admission in one of two ways:

In order to qualify for admission, applicants for the Certificate in Nonprofit Management must:

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree
  • Have significant related experience
  • Demonstrate writing ability by taking a writing proficiency exam 


  • Hold a master’s degree in a relevant discipline from an accredited college or university.
