Teachers Helping English Language Proficiency
Teachers HELP - Helping English Language Proficiency
Final Summary - ESL (English as a Second Language) Endorsement
This was a National Professional Development Grant from the U.S. Department of Education awarded to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) on May 1, 2012 and offered through August 31, 2017. Goals from the inception of the grant included: increase number of ESL licensed teachers (goal 140 over 5 years), increase placement & retention of teachers serving English Learners (ELs) in six partner LEAs, and increase preparation of ALL teachers to serve ELs.
Despite the grant closing; teacher licensure for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) may still be completed at UTC through one of the paths below:
- Add-on endorsement to teaching license – Teachers with a current teaching license may take coursework at UTC, the ESL Praxis, and add the ESL endorsement to the license. For further information please contact Avalon Gourlay, UTC Certification Officer ([email protected]).
- Master’s degree with ESL endorsement – Students wishing to complete a master’s degree with an English as a Second Language Concentration may complete the Advanced Practice M.Ed. with ESL Concentration. For further information please contact Dr. Sarah Sandefur, Literacy Professor ([email protected]).
