Alexandr M. Sokolov

 

I focus my knowledge in the fields of Engineering, Management, Technology, and Mechatronics.

I am a graduate of Industrial Systems Engineering, Engineering Management of the University of Tennessee for my Ph.D. I am also a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University for my Masters of Business Administration in Finance and I hold a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in Biological Sciences where I focused on Bioinformatics or Computer Programming for Biological Sciences.

I am interested in research in many different fields from Industrial Systems Engineering to Engineering Management. Alongside my academic accolades, I have over eight years of in field experience spanning different sectors of the industry including energy, e-commerce, research, and technology.

My passion has always been teaching and I am looking to expand my knowledge at the University of Tennesee Chattanooga.

  • ETEM 3550 - Project Management and Practice
    • Introduction to the identification, selection, and planning of projects. Specific topics include: definition of project and program, project leader selection, project goals, team selection, organizational structure, work breakdown structures (WBS), scheduling, PERT/Gantt charts, critical path method (CPM), budgeting, decision analysis, risk management, and the monitoring and control of projects. MS Project Management software is applied.
  • ETEM 4540 - Value Management
    • Introduces Value Engineering concepts and demonstrates the application of techniques which maximize the value of products, processes, construction, or services. Topics covered include functional analysis, functional costing, generation of alternative designs, evaluation of alternative designs, lifecycle cost analysis, proposal preparation, and presentations. Project required.
  • ENCE 3520 - Engineering Economy
    • Economic decision making for engineering systems. Choice of alternatives by equivalent annual cost, rate-of-return, present worth, and benefit-cost methods. Tax influences, statistical decision making, replacement policy.

 

Undergradute Mechatronics Courses In-class

  • ETME 3110 - Control Systems Technology
    • Classical control system concepts including block diagrams, transfer functions, stability and damping including measurement, actuation, and control elements used in systems.  Frequency response analysis, gain, and phase margin.  Stability criterion and root locus. Controller assessment and selection using ultimate gain and process reaction.  Influence of nonlinearities and lags on system performance. Laboratory experiences will demonstrate real-world applications and usage of software tools for analysis and design.
  • ETME 3210 - Autmated Material Handling
    • Basics of conveyor systems design, industrial robots, and conventional rack systems.  Topics include production flow, storage systems, and overhead monorails.  Emphasis placed on total system integration, from receipt of order to transport completion. Applications of barcoding, RFID, vision systems, and AGVs are covered.

 

Graduate Engineering Management Course Online and In-class

  • ENGM 5540 - Technical Project Management
    • All aspects of project management are covered with emphasis on human and institutional interactions that occur during management of technical projects. Methods of resource identification and allocation, integration of scheduling and cost factors, development of project plans and control are addressed. Project control methods such as PERT and CPM are introduced. A project case study is carried through the semester to illustrate decisions and problems encountered in technical project management. Individual presentations required.
  • ENGM 5550 - Technical Entrepreneurship and Leadership
    • An examination technology, organizational, and human factor issues in technology companies of all sizes. Differences between entrepreneurship, technological leadership, innovation and trusteeship are examined. Technological leadership and technological entrepreneurship are explored for various stages of a company’s development and for various sizes of companies. A framework for examining principles of technological leadership and entrepreneurship in an operating enterprise will be applied to case studies.
  • ENGM 5580 -  Advanced Engineering Economy
    • The design and analysis of financial strategies in a technical environment. Emphasis is on the application of these strategies in competitive industry. Core topics include review and application of basic engineering economy concepts, mathematical techniques and models, treatment of risk and uncertainties, cost of capital, demand and price elasticity as it applies to capital investment decisions, financial statements, financial ratio analysis, taxes and inflation, capital budgeting, and financial planning. Special topics include ethics and legal perspectives. Background in undergraduate engineering economy or equivalent. Knowledge of time value of money, benefit-cost methods, tax influences, and statistical decision making. 
  • ENGM 5920 - Graduate Internship in Engineering
    • Supervised professional experience in industry at the graduate level. This course provides the structure and focus for a graduate intern field assignment, ensuring that the internship experience is appropriate and consistent with the student's course of study and professional development.
  • ENGM 5960 - Capstone
    • Engineering management research project that includes literature review, data collection, analysis of data, and conclusions. Final project report and oral defense required.
