Fostering a Sense of Belonging among Female African-American Faculty and Staff at UTC (Co-Presenter with Sherese Williams, Dr. Carmen Lewis, Dr. Shekila Melchior, and April Wilson)

African American women in the academy differ in experiences, background, and beliefs; however, they are connected in their struggle to be accepted and respected, and to have a voice in an institution with many views (Collins 2001) . This panel will examine the experiences of African-American faculty and staff at UTC. The purpose of this session is to provide insight and tools for improving these experiences and creating a more inclusive experience at UTC. Participants will gain an understanding of the African American faculty and staff experience related to issues of racism, discrimination, and microaggressions. Participants will also be given the opportunity to discuss the ways in which these experiences impact faculty and staff in both their academic and social environments. Finally, participants will leave with ideas of creating a sense of belonging on campus.
