Letter of Interest: Submit a signed and dated letter of approximately 500 words discussing your interest in pursuing creative writing and describing the extent of your financial need. Judges preference letters reflect that reflect the student's intellectual curiosity and passions, and not merely their professional goals. Then again, you might describe the kinds of courses, texts, or intellectual problems that inspire you to do your best work and explain what it is about them that so engages you. In describing your financial need, emphasize contributing factors that might not be apparent to the English Department Scholarships Committee from a glance at your financial aid records, and be as specific as possible in describing how a scholarship award would encourage or advance your scholarly development. Please submit your letter as a PDF.

Manuscript: Submit 5 pages of poetry or prose, saved as a PDF file.

The Thelma Styles Igou Poetry Scholarship

Newly accepted and current undergraduate and graduate students at UTC are eligible to participate, excluding undergraduate seniors and final-semester graduate students. The student given this scholarship shall have demonstrated excellence in the writing of poetry. All other qualifications and considerations being equal, it is the Donor’s preference that consideration for these awards be given to students demonstrating financial need. Please submit your manuscript as a PDF.
