Advice for ESL students

Expose yourself to as much English as possible outside of your English classes. You can improve your English by watching TV shows or movies and reading books, news articles, or other texts. Podcasts are also a good way to improve your listening skills.

Hometown: Kent, Ohio

Areas of expertise: While I've taught ESL at many different levels, I have spent the last several years teaching advanced reading and writing skills to upper-level students. I have also taught freshman English courses. This experience improved my understanding of which skills ESL students must develop to succeed in American universities.

Favorite place on campus: While there are many nice places on campus, I think my favorite is the library. The building has a lot of windows that let in light, and beautiful views of Chattanooga are visible from the top floor.

Favorite thing about UTC: I like that UTC is so close to downtown Chattanooga. It’s possible to walk from campus to many parks, restaurants, and other interesting places.

Interesting facts: I lived in Moscow, Russia for five years. I worked on learning Russian, but I still have a lot to learn!
