At the end of each session, students are required to take the TOEFL ITP exam. This is a paper-based test used to measure the progress students have made during the semester. It may also be used for undergraduate and graduate level admissions at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Once a student has attained the target TOEFL score, they are no longer eligible for study in the ESL Institute at UTC.
Students who wish to repeat level six may submit a formal request providing a specific reason for needing to repeat the level (e.g. they have failed the course or its section; they have not yet achieved the TOEFL score necessary for undergraduate or graduate admission; they would like to work more on particular skills they need to master).
Students may also take the computer-based TOEFL exam. The UTC Testing Center is a Certified Test Administration Site (CTAS) and has been approved by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to provide the TOEFL iBT test. Extra feeds apply.
UTC requires a TOEFL ITP score of 500 for admission to undergraduate programs. Students must score 550 or higher for admission to graduate programs.
