Invitation to School Groups: A Day in the Life
UTC’s College of Engineering and Computer Science invites school groups to join in an interactive session to help students learn about the application of scientific and mathematical knowledge as they experience A Day In the Life of an engineer and computer programmer! Educators are encouraged to reach out to arrange this fun-filled enrichment activity for their seventh through twelve grade students. We can accommodate up to 100 students per visit. One chaperone per 20 attending students must be present for the program. If educators are willing to make arrangements through our budget office, we will even assist with transportation fees!
What can you expect?
A Day in the Life includes a round of lab experiences within civil, chemical, mechanical, and electrical engineering as well as mechatronics/robotics, which involves computer programming. A brief keynote introduction by college leadership would help set the stage for lab experiences that follow. Then students will be given a brief tour of a portion of campus on their way to the quad or food court to eat their sack lunch.
Outcomes:
- Students will be able to identify multiple engineering disciplines.
- Students will practice lab-based skills.
- Students will gain experience in a college community.
Sample Schedule:
10:00 – 10:15 am: Arrive on campus
10:15 – 10:35 am: Welcome and academics programs overview
10:35 – 10:40 am: Breakout into 5 rotations and move to labs area with leading faculty and chaperones
10:40 – 12:10 pm: Visit each lab area for a demonstration or short hands-on experience (civil engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and mechatronics/robotics technology)
12:10 – 12:30 pm: Assemble as a large group and travel with a guide on a short loop highlighting key areas on campus
12:30 – 1:00 pm: Students enjoy their sack lunch at the University Center or on Chamberlain Field
Dates:
Typically, A Day in the Life can be arranged for late November/early December or mid to late April. Please connect with us to get specific dates for our upcoming A Day in the Life series!
