Shawn Ryan is Executive Staff Writer for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Before joining the university, he spent more than 30 years as a newspaper journalist, including nine years at the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

While he was the newspaper’s Features Editor from 2013 through 2016, the Times Free Press won Best Features Section in the state in 2014 and 2016 from the Tennessee Press Association. In 2015, the Society for Features Journalism Awards selected him as one of the Top 4 headline writers in the country.

A fan of all things horror, fantasy and science fiction, he has written two horror novels, Brethren and Nocturnas, which were bought and published by Pocket Books. 

Shawn and his wife, Lori, live in the Crescent Park neighborhood in Brainerd. Lori is the Art Teacher at Ivy Academy and a member of In-Town Gallery on the North Shore.
